Linen: needle lace (Reticella)

What you would seeLo que verías

The piece appears as a long, narrow strip set horizontally against a uniform black background that fills the entire frame. It is lace made from warm off-white, almost bone-colored thread, its delicacy heightened by the contrast with the smooth darkness behind it. The upper and lower edges are two continuous, slightly denser and more regular lines that frame the band and give it stability. Between them stretches an open, irregular network of fine threads that cross, knot, and form small organic cells resembling branches, cobwebs, or coral. At regular intervals, a more compact diamond-shaped or floral motif appears, worked more densely and with slight relief. Five complete motifs can be distinguished along the band, with fragments at both ends, suggesting that the design once repeated further and that this is a section cut from a larger piece. A horizontal line of stitches runs through the center and organizes the composition. The lighting is even and frontal, without strong shadows, revealing the subtly varying thickness of the linen thread, its matte texture, and small irregularities characteristic of handwork. No scale is given, and there are no hands, bodies, or reference objects, so the strip floats in isolation, almost like a linear drawing.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two straight edges and the line running through the center, then notice how the open net loosens and becomes irregular between them. Next, look for the denser diamond-like motifs and compare their spacing. The fragmentary motifs at both ends change the reading of the piece: this is not a finished object, but a section cut from a repeating pattern.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is a Lace Band by an unknown maker, produced in Italy in the 1800s in linen using reticella needle lace. It belongs to the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art and comes from The Frances McIntosh Sherwin Collection. Reticella is a historic Italian needle-lace technique originally built around geometric motifs worked over a withdrawn or cut thread ground. It flourished in Renaissance Italy, and its patterns continued to be copied and reinterpreted for centuries. The maker of this band is not known, nor is its precise use; it probably trimmed a garment or household linen, but the source does not confirm this.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite the seemingly free, web-like irregularity of the net, the denser motifs align at regular intervals along a strict central axis, so the band combines hand-made variation with an almost architectural sense of rhythm.

The conservatorLa restauradora

Looking at this lace band as a restorer, I am struck by its fragility. It is bone-colored linen thread on a black background, held by two straight, denser borders framing an irregular openwork net. I see five denser rhomboid motifs repeating at intervals and a central line of stitches organizing the whole. The even frontal light reveals the variable thickness of the matte thread and small handmade irregularities. As a nineteenth-century Italian fragment in reticella needle lace, it makes me think about its preservation and the hours of handwork involved.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I see a linear constellation here. Against the deep black, which feels like a night sky, the bone-colored thread forms organic cells like branches or coral and also like star maps. The five dense motifs are like five stars or galaxies aligned by a central line acting as a celestial equator. The two continuous borders frame the universe of the strip. I am fascinated that it is a fragment cut from something larger, like observing just a slice of the cosmos through a telescope.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic strip floating! It is light bone-colored on black and looks like a spiderweb with little flowers and hidden diamonds. I count five matching puffier little shapes and some cut off at the edges, as if someone snipped a piece from something bigger. It has two straight little borders on top and bottom and lots of tiny threads in the middle making little houses. I imagine someone made it by hand with lots of patience, like a drawing made with thread instead of pencil.
