Bobbin lace

What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal strip of bobbin lace in pale ivory, almost bone white, isolated against a deep black background that emphasizes its openwork. The piece is long and rectangular, visually divided into three panels by subtle vertical seams where sections were joined. The pattern is dense and seemingly symmetrical: scrolling baroque volutes, stylized leaves, and large eight-petaled blossoms intertwine in a continuous foliate scroll. In the foreground, two distinct textures emerge: opaque, tightly woven motifs that form the solid flowers and leaves, and an ultra-fine hexagonal mesh ground that fills the negative space, dotted with tiny teardrop-shaped voids. The edges are irregular and slightly frayed, with soft scalloped points and loose threads that speak to age and fragility. Even, diffuse light reveals the subtle relief of each braid and the minute shadows cast by knots. Intimate in scale, it would fit in the palm of a hand, designed to edge a collar, cuff, or altar cloth. On close inspection, charming irregularities appear: uneven tension in the net and petals that are not perfectly identical, clear signs of handmade work.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the strip from left to right to feel the rhythm of blossoms and scrolls. Then focus on the interplay between solid areas and sheer netting, where the skill of the lacemaker shines. Notice the vertical joining seams and the gently frayed scalloped edges that hint at its long history.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a bobbin lace edging attributed to the Abruzzi region in Italy, dated to the 1700s–1800s, by an unknown maker. It is part of the Textiles department and belongs to the Frances McIntosh Sherwin Collection. Bobbin lace is a handcrafted technique in which multiple threads wound on bobbins are braided and crossed over a pillow following a pricked pattern. Abruzzi in central Italy had a strong lacemaking tradition, most famously the L'Aquila lace. The original use of this specific fragment is not documented, but such edgings were commonly applied as decoration to fashionable, domestic, and ecclesiastical textiles.

Curious detailDato curioso

L'Aquila lace from Abruzzi was so highly valued that it was taught in convent schools, with techniques passed down from mothers to daughters for generations.

The conservatorLa restauradora

Come closer and you will see why this edging moves me as a conservator. That pale ivory almost bone white is not uniform, it has very compact opaque areas and an extremely fine hexagonal mesh that reveals the black background. The scalloped edges are frayed with loose threads, a trace of its fragility. You can see it divided into three panels by discreet seams. Each knot casts a tiny shadow. It is pure handwork, with varied tensions and petals that are never identical.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this lace as if it were a constellation against the deep black background. The large eight-petaled flowers are like stars and the baroque scrolls and stylized leaves form orbits connecting them. The hexagonal mesh is the sky in between, full of tiny teardrop-shaped voids. Although it looks symmetrical, if you look calmly you will see nothing is identical. It is an intimate universe that fits in your hands, made to finish a collar or a tablecloth with its own light.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little white path over the night. I see three little parts stuck together and many small flowers with eight petals like little stars, with tiny leaves and curls hugging each other. There are dense parts where light does not pass and parts with tiny teardrop holes where you can see the black underneath. The edges have little points and some loose threads because it is very old. If I touch it with my eyes, it feels soft but also like it could break easily.
