Linen: bobbin lace

What you would seeLo que verías

Against a uniform black background, a long, narrow strip of ivory-colored lace stretches horizontally across nearly the entire width of the image. Its proportions are strongly elongated, like a border meant to be sewn onto the edge of another fabric. The upper edge is straight and continuous; the lower one forms a series of pointed scallops that rise and fall in a regular rhythm. The design repeats along the length of the piece: broad motifs that recall fans, open flowers, or radiating suns. Each unit has elongated petals spreading outward from a small, dark center — actually an openwork hole that lets the background show through. Between one motif and the next there are smaller flowers, arches, and a fine network of tiny holes, dots, and intercrossed lines that create denser areas alongside almost transparent ones. The lighting is even and frontal, with no strong shadows, emphasizing the contrast between the pale thread and the black ground. The delicate texture of the linen is visible: extremely fine threads, minute knots, slightly irregular edges, and a surface that is not completely flat, with small raised points where threads cross and gather.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the straight top edge and then the scalloped bottom edge to feel the rhythm of the repeat. Next look for the small dark centers: they are not beads or stones, but openings. That detail shifts the piece from a surface pattern to a structure made as much of air as of thread.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a lace edging made with the bobbin lace technique in linen, attributed to the Italian region of Abruzzi and dated to the 1700s. Its author is unknown and it belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, in the Textiles department, as part of The Frances McIntosh Sherwin Collection. Bobbin lace is built by interlacing multiple threads handled with small bobbins, creating openwork patterns without a woven base fabric underneath. The specific garment or textile this edging was meant to trim is not known; it was probably sewn along an edge as a decorative finish.

Curious detailDato curioso

The small black dots at the centers of the flowers are not inlaid materials: they are holes in the lace, and they only look black because of the background behind them.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes when a border like this is imagined sewn onto clothing or a household textile instead of isolated on black?¿Qué cambia al imaginar esta cenefa cosida a una prenda o a un textil de uso cotidiano, en lugar de verla aislada sobre negro?
  2. How much of the design is thread and how much is the empty space between threads?¿Cuánto del diseño está hecho de hilo y cuánto del espacio vacío entre los hilos?
  3. What can a repeating pattern made by hand, with tiny variations, tell us about the time and skill of its maker?¿Qué puede decirnos un motivo repetido a mano, con variaciones mínimas, sobre el tiempo y la habilidad de quien lo hizo?

What moves me most is the patience behind it. This bobbin lace is made with very fine linen threads, crossed by hand with bobbins, without a woven ground. I notice the straight upper edge for sewing and the lower edge with pointed scallops. The even light reveals the relief, the tiny knots, and the openwork that lets the black background show through. It is an 18th century border from Abruzzo, meant to trim another textile with delicacy.

I see a night sky in negative. Against that black background float radiant suns and open flowers, with petals spreading from a dark center like an eclipse. Between them there are fine nets, arches and tiny dots that remind me of constellations. Everything repeats with rhythm, like orbits. The long narrow band looks like a strip of the universe made with ivory thread, where sheer and dense areas play with light.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a crown for a giant skirt. It is long with little points at the bottom like waves or tiny mountains. It has fans and flowers with a little hole in the middle where you can see the black behind. Some parts are thicker and some have lots of tiny little holes. It is creamy ivory and looks super delicate, as if it would break if you pulled it hard. I like counting the little points and the little suns.

What light color is the lace thread that contrasts with the black background?

    HintPista

Look at the thread color, not the dark background of the photo.

  2. #2

What does the bottom edge of the strip look like: straight or wavy with pointed scallops?

    HintPista

Compare the top edge with the bottom one, one is smooth and the other makes little points.

  3. #3

What large motifs repeat along the border: fans and flowers or just plain squares?

    HintPista

Look for shapes opening like suns with petals from a dark center.
