Linen: bobbin lace (tape lace)

What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal strip of off-white lace is centered against a solid black background, filling most of the frame. It is long and narrow, with uneven, cut ends suggesting a fragment of a larger border. In the foreground, the textile itself is the sole subject, with no other elements. The composition follows a continuous horizontal band: a single woven tape meanders and loops back on itself, forming interlaced scrolls, figure-eights, and curling volutes. Between the tape, open spaces of irregular shape — diamonds, ovals, and curved polygons — reveal the black ground and create an airy, net-like effect. The texture appears fine and slightly crisp, characteristic of linen, with tiny bridging stitches and mesh bars that join the scrolls. Both the upper and lower edges are scalloped and organic, with undulating indentations. Light is even and diffuse, highlighting the subtle relief of the braided tape and the contrast between the opaque cord and the transparent voids. In scale, it reads as a delicate trimming a few inches wide, perhaps for a cuff, collar, or household linen, with a faintly aged ivory tone.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Trace the main tape from one end to the other to follow its maze of curves. Then focus on the black voids: their shapes define the design as much as the thread does. Finally notice the tiny mesh bridges that hold everything together, almost hidden.

ContextContexto

This is a lace edging by an unknown maker, dated to the 1800s and attributed to Europe, according to records from the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is part of The Frances McIntosh Sherwin Collection. The technique is listed as linen bobbin lace, specifically tape lace, in which a woven tape forms the pattern and is connected by mesh stitches. Such laces were widely used in the 19th century to trim clothing and domestic linens. No further details about its exact place of manufacture, maker, or original use are recorded, and the source description provides no additional information.

Curious detailDato curioso

Tape lace like this was often made by shaping a bobbin-made tape into scrolls and joining it with simple stitches, allowing for free-flowing designs, and linen made it durable enough for repeated washing.

I focus on how this lace strip was made. It is 19th century tape lace in linen, where a woven tape forms volutes, loops and figure eights held together by almost invisible mesh stitches. Look at the scalloped edge and the openwork holes that reveal the black background, with rhombuses and ovals. The slightly yellowed ivory tone and the fine, slightly rough texture point to aged linen. It is an elongated, narrow fragment, a few centimeters wide, with irregularly cut ends, made to trim a cuff, a neckline or household linen.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Looking at this lace feels like looking at constellations. Against the black background, deep like a night sky, the ivory tape traces orbits and loops that curl like galaxies. The openwork holes are luminous voids, rhombuses and ovals that let the darkness show through and give lightness to the symmetrical horizontal composition. Even soft light highlights the relief of the braided thread, opaque against the transparency of the openwork. I imagine that contrast between matter and void is what made it elegant as a delicate trim for 19th century clothing.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a ribbon roller coaster. A creamy colored tape making loops, little eights and curly tails, all continuous like a road that never ends. From a distance it looks like a caterpillar with lots of bellies. Between the loops there are funny shaped little holes, like diamonds and little eggs, and you can see the black behind them. The edges are not straight, they are wavy like when you cut with fancy scissors. It looks soft but bumpy, and it must have decorated a pretty dress a long time ago.
