What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical etching in black ink on cream-colored paper, with uneven edges and a handwritten signature along the bottom. The scene takes place inside a crowded vehicle, seen from very close up, with no empty space around it. In the foreground on the right, a young woman in three-quarter view looks toward the viewer; she wears a large dark hat and a heavy coat, and one pale, barely sketched hand rests below. Beside her, another woman in a wide hat leans to the left, her face lit and her mouth slightly open. Behind them, men's profiles crowd together, with top hats, beards and white collars standing out against the gloom. In the lower left corner, a dark cylindrical form, like a hatbox, is crossed by a band of light. On the right, a bright window, scored with diagonal strokes, suggests the world rushing by outside and lets in a sudden glare. Everything is built from thousands of short, crossed and parallel strokes: the hatching creates dense shadows, highlights on faces and rough textures in cloth and wood. The composition is tilted and cramped; figures are cut off at the edges, as in a snapshot taken among strangers.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the woman in the foreground on the right: her face is the clearest point in the crowd. Then look for the faces emerging between hats in the background, and finally follow the bright window on the right. That shift from darkness to light helps you sense the movement of the vehicle and the closeness among strangers.

ContextContexto

According to the source, Omnibus is an etching from 1892 by Anders Zorn (1860–1920), a Swedish artist, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. Along the lower edge of the print there is a handwritten inscription that appears to read “Omnibus Parisien,” so the scene probably takes place in a Parisian omnibus, although the source record does not specify where it was made. In the late nineteenth century, Zorn was internationally admired for his virtuosity as an etcher, able to suggest light and movement with an economy of line. The omnibus, a form of collective public transport, was then an everyday setting for social mixing and fleeting encounters in the modern city.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the image is almost entirely filled with black strokes, Zorn leaves the paper nearly bare in a few places —the foreground woman's face and hand—, and those small reserves shine as if they were lit inside the vehicle.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how the print is made: an etching in black ink on cream paper, with deckled edges and a handwritten signature at the bottom. Everything is built from thousands of short, parallel and crosshatched strokes; the hatching creates dense shadows and pale highlights on faces, fabrics and wood. I am drawn to the band of light cutting across the dark cylindrical shape in the lower left corner, perhaps a hatbox, and the diagonally hatched window that suggests motion.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this omnibus as an indoor night sky. The gloom is deep and faces appear like moons lit by a harsh light coming through the window on the right. White collars and pale hands are bright spots among dark hats and heavy coats. The hatching works like a constellation of lines that gives volume to the darkness. I love how the light simultaneously reveals and hides these strangers packed together in a tilted, airless space.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like everyone is super squished and cannot move. A lady in front looks right at us, with her big dark hat, and her hand looks very pale down below. Next to her another lady leans to the side with her mouth open as if she is talking. Behind them there are men with top hats and beards all pressed together. Down on the left there is something round and black with a stripe of light. The window on the right has little lines and it feels like the carriage is going fast.
