What you would seeLo que verías

In the center of a plain, even, matte grey ground, a single teaspoon appears in vertical position, seen from above and occupying most of the height of the image. Below is the bowl, an elongated oval that ends in a soft point; above, the handle narrows at the neck, widens gradually, and finishes in another point, like a lance tip. The composition is symmetrical and solitary: there are no other objects, hands, table, or shadows that suggest a setting. The metal is polished silver, almost mirror-like in the bowl, where a large white reflection blurs any sense of depth, and paler and more satiny along the handle. Cool blue-grey glints and a dark, elongated reflection run down the center of the handle, an effect of the studio lighting. Small signs of use can be made out: fine scratches, faint wear, and a slightly brownish tarnished area where the bowl joins the stem. At the upper end of the handle, an engraved monogram in thin, cursive, interlaced lines stands out, difficult to decipher at this size. The scale is ambiguous without a reference, but the proportions —a long, slender handle in relation to the bowl— give it an elegant, light air.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette, long and pointed at both ends, then move slowly from the bowl up the handle. Notice the reflection that distorts along the metal and, at the top, pause on the engraved monogram: that small, personal mark changes a utensil into someone's possession.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this teaspoon was made in 1804 by Timothy Gerrish (1749–1815), an American silversmith, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in the early 19th century. It is made of silver and belongs to the Decorative Art and Design area of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived as a gift from Mrs. S. Prentiss Baldwin. The pointed handle and engraved initials are consistent with the restrained table silver produced in the United States in that period. The source does not identify who commissioned it, who used it, or what the monogram initials are, so that part of its history is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

Silver darkens on contact with sulfur compounds in the air and in some foods, forming silver sulfide; the brownish veil visible where the bowl meets the handle is probably an early trace of that tarnish.

I focus on the metal and its memory. This silver teaspoon from 1804 made by Timothy Gerrish in Portsmouth keeps very subtle traces of use: fine scratches, a slightly tarnished brownish area where the bowl meets the stem, and bluish highlights from the studio light. The white reflection on the bowl almost erases depth and the pointed lance-like handle shows that sober elegance of the early 19th century. The engraved monogram at the top, with thin intertwined cursive lines, is no longer easy to read, and that is also part of its story.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see it like a small silvery satellite against a uniform matte gray sky. It stands alone, vertical and symmetrical, with no table or shadows, as if floating in empty space. The oval bowl shines like a mirror and returns a large white reflection, while a dark stripe runs down the center of the long slender handle. That contrast between shiny and matte reminds me of moon phases. It is made of silver, sober and light, and although we do not know who commissioned it or what initials its monogram hides, its simple shape orients us like an everyday constellation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic little spoon balancing upright in the middle of nothing. At the bottom it has its oval part for tea and at the top a long handle that ends in a little point like a princess lance. Everything is silvery and very shiny, especially the bowl that reflects a big white light. The background is smooth gray with nothing else, no table or hands. It has a little drawing of tangled letters at the top that I do not understand and tiny scratches from a lot of use. I like it because it looks elegant but also playful.
