A wide, horizontal print in very pale greys and beige, printed on cream paper with generous margins. Outside the image, at the upper left, the words “Supplement to Piccadilly” can be read, and at the upper right, “July 13th, 1878”, in small capital letters. The scene is dominated by an expanse of calm water that occupies the middle and much of the lower half of the composition. The surface is suggested by faint horizontal strokes, soft tonal washes and a few darker lines that barely interrupt the mist. On the right, in the distance, the opposite bank emerges through haze: low buildings, a church spire, two tall industrial chimneys and a long plume of smoke that spreads sideways and dissolves into the sky. Beneath that shore floats a long, dark barge. On the far left, another bank or pier is hinted at with a few light lines. In the immediate foreground, at lower right, two small human figures stand beside a horizontal rail or rope; one wears a lighter garment and seems to lean slightly forward. The lower strip is somewhat darker, like a shore in shadow. At lower left appears the artist's butterfly-shaped monogram. Everything has a grainy, powdery texture, with soft edges and almost no strong contrasts, as if forms were still appearing through dawn fog.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First let the eye rest in the pale, almost empty centre of the river, then move slowly towards the darker shore on the right. Notice how the smoke, the chimneys and the foreground figures only emerge after a few seconds. That delayed discovery is the heart of the early-morning effect.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as Early Morning: The Thames at Battersea, a lithograph dated 1878 by James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), an American artist. It belongs to the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived as a Gift of George W. Bierce. The inscriptions at the top indicate that this impression was published as a supplement to Piccadilly on 13 July 1878. Whistler, who was based mainly in London, returned repeatedly to the Thames and became known for tonally restrained views of the river. It is not known from the source whether this impression was printed under his direct supervision.

Curious detailDato curioso

The small motif in the lower left is not a flower: it is Whistler's famous butterfly monogram, the stylised signature he used instead of writing his name on many works.

What fascinates me here is the fragility of the material. It is a lithograph on cream paper with wide margins, published as a Supplement to Piccadilly on July 13th, 1878. The tones are very pale beiges and greys, almost without contrast, with a grainy and powdery texture. The fog is not painted, it is suggested by leaving the paper almost empty. That slightly darker strip at the bottom is the only anchor of weight. The butterfly monogram at the lower left is delicately printed.

For me this print is a study of diffuse light at dawn. The Thames occupies the center and lower half with faint horizontal strokes that barely break the mist. In the distance to the right I can make out the opposite bank with low buildings, the spire of a church and two tall chimneys releasing a long sideways column of smoke. Everything feels suspended. It is industrial London seen not with drama, but with silence and distance, as if the air itself were the subject.

It looks like the river is hidden under a blanket of fog. You can hardly see anything and you have to search a lot. There is very light water in the middle and in the back some little houses, a tiny church spire and two chimneys with smoke stretching like a long cloud. At the bottom right there are two tiny people next to a rope, one in lighter clothes. And at the bottom left there is a little butterfly which is the artist's signature. I like it because it is calm and mysterious.

  1. #1

Above the image, outside the drawing, there are two small texts. What date is printed on the right?

    HintPista

Look at the top margin, on the right side, on the cream paper.

  2. #2

In the foreground, at the bottom right next to a railing, how many small human figures can be seen?

    HintPista

Look at the lower right corner, where the riverbank becomes darker.

  3. #3

On the distant bank to the right, through the mist, what two tall structures release a long column of smoke?

    HintPista

Look for dark verticals near the church spire, on the right side.
