wool: tapestry with sehna loops

What you would seeLo que verías

The piece occupies the center of the image, mounted on a flat, beige woven support with a fine, regular grain that contrasts with the irregularity of the fragment. Its outline is broken and roughly diamond-shaped, wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, with frayed, curled, and missing edges. The dominant color is a dusty tan, like dry sand, with variations toward cream and brownish gray. In the upper half, the wool forms abundant, raised, tangled loops, almost like short, disorderly fleece; some threads cross, knot, and curl over themselves. Below that fluffy zone, the weave becomes flatter and denser. Across the middle run two horizontal bands of dark purple, nearly plum-brown, separated by a thin stripe of the base color. They are not perfectly parallel: they sag, vary in thickness, and stop before the edges. In the lower section the interlacing of warp and weft can be clearly seen in small, regular crossings. At the bottom, loose vertical threads hang like a short, uneven fringe, some straight and others twisted. The light is even, without harsh shadows, and emphasizes fibers, wear, and the fragility of the material. No figures or recognizable motifs appear; the whole effect comes from texture, color, and deterioration.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the two dark bands: they are the clearest surviving order in the fragment. Then move upward to the disorderly loops and downward to the fringe, and notice how three different textures coexist on a single piece of wool. The frayed edges change its reading: it is not only decoration, but also evidence of time and breakage.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as *Wool Fragment*, by an unknown maker, dated to the 200s CE and associated with Dura-Europos, Syria. It is made of wool in tapestry weave with sehna loops, a technique that produces raised loops on the surface. Dura-Europos was an ancient city on the Euphrates, excavated in campaigns in the 1920s and 1930s, where numerous objects from its final period were preserved. The fragment is now at the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of the Yale University Gallery of Fine Arts. What larger textile it belonged to, and what it was used for, is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: after some eighteen centuries, the two purple stripes retain a much denser, darker tone than the surrounding beige wool, so the simplest part of the design is also what first draws the eye today.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how fragile this wool fragment from 3rd century Dura-Europos is. I see the earthy beige with creamy and grayish brown nuances, and especially those raised, tangled sehna loops on the upper part, which contrast with the flatter lower area where warp and weft are visible. The two dark purple horizontal bands crossing the center tell me there was intention and design, even if today they are interrupted and faded by wear. The uneven fringe and frayed edges speak to me of loss and of time.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at this irregular rhomboid of beige wool mounted on a light backing, I think of a worn star map. Those tangled loops on top are like a fluffy nebula, dense and chaotic. The two dark purple bands crossing it remind me of interstellar dust lanes, not perfectly parallel, thinning and breaking before the edge. Below, the flat weave with its grid and the hanging fringe feels like the edge of what is observed, where the image becomes sharp and then dissolves into loose threads, like traces of light escaping.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little piece of an old blanket that got torn. On top it is super fluffy and all tangled, like my stuffed animal's hair after sleeping a lot, with little curls that cross and get knotted. In the middle it has two dark purple stripes, as if someone had painted two wobbly lines that do not reach the edge. Below it looks smoother with tiny squares, and little threads hang like twisted tassels. It is light sandy colored and you can tell it is very delicate and needs a lot of care so it does not fall apart more.
