What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal black-and-white engraving, finely hatched on warm cream paper, shows at center a nude, bearded, powerfully muscled man seen from behind and in three-quarter view, wrestling a large lion. He presses his chest against the animal's back, wraps his right arm around its neck and squeezes; the lion, with its mouth open, teeth visible and one front paw on a cylindrical stone drum, pushes with its hind legs while its long tail arcs to the right. A cloth streams from the hero's shoulders. In the lower left, on the drum, read '1548' and the monogram 'HSB'; at upper left a cartouche carries a Latin inscription. To the left rises a round tower and fallen column pieces; in the middle ground, a walled city with turrets and a domed tower stands under a pale sky. At right, a shield leans against the ground and weapons and tools hang from a gnarled tree with bare branches and dense foliage in the background. Light is built only from lines: dense cross-hatching deepens shadow and leaves skin and fur almost luminous. Everything fits tightly in a small format, and the bodies touch the edges, creating compressed tension.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the intertwined bodies at the center and trace how each of Hercules's limbs locks another movement of the lion. Then look left, toward the weapons hung on the tree, and right, toward the city: the contrast explains why this fight must be hand-to-hand. Notice, at last, the date and monogram engraved on the drum in the lower left.
ContextContexto
This engraving from 1548 is by Hans Sebald Beham (1500–1550), a German artist, and belongs to the series The Labors of Hercules; it is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It depicts the first of the hero's twelve labors: killing the Nemean lion, whose skin, according to the classical myth, no weapon could pierce, so Hercules had to strangle it. The Latin inscription at the top announces that Hercules will clothe himself in the suffocated lion's skin. It is not known, from the source information, which exact edition or impression this sheet is.

Curious detailDato curioso
Hercules appears without weapons because, in the myth, arrows and swords were useless against the lion's skin; the objects hung on the tree at right underscore that abandonment of arms.

Come closer and you will see everything is made of black lines on warm creamy paper. Volume comes from cross-hatching: where lines gather, shadow appears, and where they thin out, light remains. Notice how the densest hatching darkens the lion belly and how the finest threads make Hercules muscular back shine. It is a small, tightly cropped engraving from 1548, with bodies almost touching the edges. The monogram HSB and the date are engraved on the stone column drum at the lower left.

This fight looks like a constellation caught on paper. Hercules and the Lion, both in the sky as Hercules and Leo, here lock in a tight, circular struggle, like a binary star pair that will not let go. The hero, seen from behind, wraps his arm around the beast neck while a cloth floats from his shoulders like a nebula. In the background, the walled city and domed tower under a pale sky feel like a horizon watched patiently. The Latin cartouche at the top announces the hero will wear the skin of the throttled lion.

They are hugging super tight but fighting! The strong man with no clothes squeezes the lion neck and the lion goes grrr with its mouth open and puts a paw on a round stone like a drum. The lion long tail curves to one side and the man little cloth flies like a cape. Behind there is a round tower, fallen stones and a city with many little houses and a dome. On the right there is a shield on the ground and a twisty tree with things hanging. Everything fits squeezed together and you can feel how strong both are.
