What you would seeLo que verías

A long, narrow horizontal engraving designed as an ornamental frieze, printed in black ink on pale paper. The composition is crowded and nearly symmetrical, packed with figures and war trophies. At the very center, seated astride a cannon, is a winged female figure wearing a laurel wreath, her torso partly bare beneath classical drapery: Victory or Fame, holding a laurel wreath aloft in her left hand while her right rests on a dragon head. Around her piles of military gear overflow: cannons, suits of armor, plumed helmets, shields with grotesque masks, folded banners, trumpets and swords. On the left, a bare-chested woman reclines against a bearded old man atop a cannon, with a smaller female figure lying among shields below. On the right, a nude, dejected male captive slumps over another cannon, chained or bound, while a small prisoner writhes near a fallen helmet beneath. The background is flat black, making the fine white lines stand out sharply. Light is created entirely through dense cross-hatching and parallel strokes. Every texture — feathers, polished metal, wrinkled cloth, hair and skin — is rendered with miniature precision that rewards slow, close looking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the calm, central winged figure: she is the still point in the heap. Then scan outward to the left and right, comparing the vulnerable nude bodies with the cold mass of cannons and armor. Notice the tiny shields with faces and how the solid black background makes the engraved white highlights glow.

Come very close and you will see this is not a freehand drawing, it is a print in black ink on light paper, a copper engraving made with a burin. The background is flat black, and all the white you see is the reserved paper. Every texture is built with extremely fine lines: cross-hatching for the armor metal, parallel strokes for skin, tiny feathers for the helmets. It is miniature work, almost like a goldsmith. There is no color, only graphic light. You need to look slowly to pick out cannons, shields with grotesque masks and feathers.

I love the order inside this chaos. It is a long horizontal and symmetrical frieze, like a crowded constellation. At the center, seated on a cannon, is the winged figure with a laurel crown, our central star. Orbiting around her are war trophies: armors, plumed helmets, shields with faces, flags, trumpets and swords. To the left and right, naked and dejected prisoners lean over cannons. Everything piles up against a black void, as if floating in night. It is a mannerist universe made only of lines.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Wow, so many things piled up! It looks like a messy room after a costume battle. In the middle there is a lady with little wings sitting on a cannon as if it were a swing, and she wears a crown of leaves. Around her there are many hats with feathers, shiny armors, shields with funny faces sticking out their tongues, flags and trumpets. There are also people without clothes who look sad and tired, lying among the cannons. Everything is in black and white and you have to search like in a find and seek game.
