What you would seeLo que verías

A long horizontal black-and-white engraving presents a dense, continuous battle frieze that fills the width. In the foreground, a tangle of male bodies in close combat: soldiers in armor, crested helmets and short antique-like tunics fight with curved swords, daggers, bows and round ornamented shields. On the left, a bearded warrior holds a fallen comrade while another raises a spear; toward the center, a helmeted horseman with raised sword charges on a rearing horse, its mane and harness rendered with fine cross-hatching. Two dead figures lie on the ground, one on his back being seized by the throat. At the center, two men grapple in an embrace, one stabbing the other. To the right, an archer draws his bow aiming at an opponent who shields himself with a circular shield decorated with a sun face. The background is solid black, silhouetting the figures and emphasizing the intricate hatching, tense muscles and drapery folds. Light appears to come from the front, modeling forms through minute linear shading. A small signature appears at the lower left and a tiny inscription at the lower right, integrated into the plate.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the frieze from left to right as an uninterrupted narrative. Pause at the center where the horseman and fallen bodies create the highest tension. Notice how the black background isolates each gesture and turns the violence into an almost sculptural relief.

ContextContexto

This is an engraving by Etienne Delaune, a French artist active from 1518/19 to about 1583, dated circa 1550–72 and part of the Combats and Triumphs series, according to Cleveland Museum of Art data. Delaune was a prominent French Renaissance goldsmith and engraver known for ornamental designs and narrative friezes with classical and military subjects. The technique is engraving on paper, notable for fine linework and detail. The source provides no further description of the episode depicted, so it cannot be securely identified as a specific historical or mythological battle. It was probably part of a decorative series intended for collectors and craftsmen.

Curious detailDato curioso

Etienne Delaune sometimes signed as Stephanus in Latin, as seen at the lower left of this print, a common practice among humanist engravers of the sixteenth century.

What holds me here is the linework. Look how Etienne Delaune, between 1550 and 1572, resolves the chaos of combat with super fine hatching against a black ground. That deep black is not shadow, it is ink cutting out every muscle, every plume, every harness on the rearing horse. The intaglio print on paper demands this control: cross-hatching to give volume to bodies, reserved whites so frontal light can model form. The signature at lower left and inscription at lower right are part of the plate. It is a frieze meant to be seen up close, very slowly.

I always look for contrast, like in the sky. And here everything is contrast: the absolute black of the background against the white of the paper, like a starless night that makes constellations of bodies stand out. The horizontal frieze reads left to right, continuous, with no horizon or landscape, just the tangle of soldiers, curved swords, round shields and that horse in the center. The light comes from the front, even, like a flash, and reveals even the shield with a sun face on the right. It is a closed universe of white violence on darkness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many people fighting and everything is super crowded! It looks like no one can breathe. I see helmets with little feathers, round shields like suns, swords and a man with bow and arrow on the right. In the middle there is a horse standing on two legs and its rider lifts his sword really high. Down on the ground there are two soldiers lying down who are not moving anymore. One man is carrying another like he wants to save him. Everything is in black and white and the background is really black, so the people stand out more.

Look at the lower central area, near the feet of those fighting hand to hand.

  2. #2

Find the archer on the right, what object is his opponent holding to protect himself?

It is round, ornate and has a face like a sun in the center.

  3. #3

In the center of the frieze, what animal appears rearing up under its rider with raised sword?

    HintPista

Look for the mane rendered with fine hatching and the harnesses, right in the middle of the battle.
