What you would seeLo que verías

A narrow, highly horizontal engraved frieze packed with a dense battle on horseback and on foot. In the foreground, interlocked bodies fill the entire surface: rearing horses, soldiers in classically inspired helmets and armor, spears, curved swords and fallen shields. On the left, a rider thrusts a spear at a fallen figure beneath his collapsed horse; the animal lies with its head twisted and mouth open. At center, a helmeted warrior with a plumed crest drives his spear into the chest of a bearded enemy raising his sword. On the right, two foot soldiers grip the reins of a runaway horse whose rider, bare-chested with a cape billowing, lifts a scimitar. On the ground, several bodies lie face down or on their sides, with abandoned shields and swords. The background is dark, almost solid black achieved with dense cross-hatching, which makes the pale silhouettes of muscles, manes and drapery stand out. The light is stark and graphic, without color. The line is extremely fine and energetic, with cross-hatched shading that models musculature and armor. The whole conveys violent motion and crowding.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the scene from left to right as if it were an ancient relief in motion. Pause on the ground: the scattered shields and fallen bodies mark the cost of fighting and shift the reading from glory to tragedy.

ContextContexto

This print belongs to the series Combats and Triumphs by Étienne Delaune (1518/19 - c. 1583), a French goldsmith, medalist and engraver active in the Renaissance period. Made around 1550-1572 in France, the series is an engraving, a widely circulated technique for ornamental and historical models at the time. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art source data, this is No. 11 and bears the inscription CVM PRIVILEGIO REGIS, indicating a royal printing privilege. No specific iconographic description is provided, so the exact subject of the combat — whether historical, mythological or allegorical — is not recorded. Stylistically it fits Mannerism with muscular figures and a continuous frieze composition.

Curious detailDato curioso

The long, narrow format imitates Roman antique friezes much admired in the French Renaissance, and was intended as a design model for goldsmiths and craftsmen decorating armor, plate or furniture.

When I look at this elongated frieze I first see the copper work: the black background is made with a very dense hatching and the pale bodies emerge because the paper is left without ink. I am struck by the extremely fine, nervous lines and the cross-hatching that models muscles, manes and armor. There are rearing horses, lances and fallen shields all crowded together with no empty space. It is violence engraved with a goldsmith's precision, made to be printed many times.

This engraving makes me think about contrast, like a night sky. The background is almost black, made with dense hatching, and the pale figures stand out as if lit up. I see a continuous frieze crowded with riders, rearing horses and foot soldiers in classicizing helmets, with lances and curved swords. Everything is packed together and in motion, with no single center. Like a constellation, each muscle and mane is drawn with very fine lines that create volume. It is pure energy in black and white.

So many people and horses together! It looks like everyone is pushing and there is no room left. On the left there is a horse lying down with its mouth open and a rider with a lance above it. In the middle a man with a feathered helmet pokes another man who raises his sword. On the right two men hold a horse rearing on two legs while its rider lifts a curved sword. On the ground there are shields lying around. Everything is in black and white and looks very shaky, as if it were very noisy.
