What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical black-and-white lithograph with a light double border and caption text below. At center, a young girl with light curly hair tucked under a dark cap leans over a wooden table in a dark interior. The only light comes from an oil lamp on the left, its elongated, bright flame casting strong chiaroscuro across her face, raised arm and bodice. With her right hand lifted, she holds a translucent egg up to the flame to inspect it inside, gazing at it with focused attention and slightly parted lips. Her left hand grips a woven wicker basket resting on her lap, holding more eggs. On the table to the left lie three or four additional eggs on a small bundle of straw. She wears a light blouse with a simple neckline, puffed sleeves pushed to the elbow, and an apron over a darker dress. The background is plain and deep black, with no detail, drawing all attention to the intimate gesture, the texture of wicker and straw, the folds of fabric and the soft glow of the egg against the light.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the light first: from the flame to the hand and to the girl’s face, the brightest passage. Then notice the contrast between the glowing egg and the absolute black background. See how the basket and table ground the quiet, domestic moment.
ContextContexto
This is an 1840 lithograph by German artist Franz Seraph Hanfstaengl (1804–1877), titled Girl Candling Eggs, part of the Prints department at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The inscription below states it reproduces a painting then in the Gemälde-Galerie in Dresden, attributed to Joseph Balchen, and was printed by Hanfstaengl himself. The image shows candling, a common 19th-century domestic practice of holding an egg to light to check freshness or fertility. Hanfstaengl was a prominent 19th-century German lithographer, publisher and later photographer, known for his art reproductions.

Curious detailDato curioso
Egg candling is still practiced today on farms to check freshness or embryo development, using the same backlit principle shown in the 1840 print.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does the single light source in darkness shape the mood of the scene?¿Qué te hace sentir el uso de una sola fuente de luz en la oscuridad?
- Does the girl seem to be working, playing or learning? Which details suggest that?¿La niña parece trabajar, jugar o aprender? ¿Qué detalles te llevan a esa idea?

I focus on how the lithograph preserves the chiaroscuro of the original painting from the Gemälde-Galerie in Dresden. The deep black background, close to #0A0A0A, makes the warm white of the translucent egg and the elongated flame of the oil lamp stand out. Look at the folds of the blouse, the texture of the woven wicker basket and the straw on the wooden table. Hanfstaengl printed this image in 1840 with remarkable control of tones between #E8E0D1 and #5C5348, typical of nineteenth-century reproduction.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
What fascinates me is light as a tool. This girl from 1840 does something very similar to what we do when looking at the stars: placing something translucent against a light source to discover what it hides inside. The oil lamp on the left is her only instrument, and with it she checks if the egg is fresh or fertile. In that dark room, with no other details, all this domestic science depends on a single flame. It is an everyday astronomy, but with eggs in a wicker basket.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
I really like how the girl hugs her basket as if they were her treasures. She is so focused looking at the egg against the light and she even opens her mouth a little. You can see she is in a dark room and only the lamp lights up her face and her arm. On the table there are more eggs on straw and she wears a dark cap and an apron. It looks like she is playing at discovering a bright secret inside the egg and she does not want to drop any of them.
