What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a creamy, lightly aged paper, an oval vignette in smoky gray tones shows two fantastical half-figures whose lower bodies turn into tools. On the left, a shaggy, horned creature with a wild upright mane, pointed ears and a snarling face; on the right, a pale nude female with short wavy hair and a classical torso. They grasp each other’s hands as if wrestling or dancing, their legs transformed into long scraper blades that cross over a small rectangular pedestal. The shading is soft and cloudy, typical of lithographic crayon with stumping, forming a dark halo around the pair and fading into the paper. Above the vignette, an arched title is built from tiny illustrated objects: brushes, scrapers, palettes, rags and ink blots compose each ornate Gothic letter. The text reads «Versuche auf Stein mit Pinsel und Schabeisen von Adolph Menzel Heft 1 (6 Blätter) Berlin 1851 Verlag u Eigenthum v Gebr Rocca in Berlin». The lower lettering imitates handwritten script with uneven inky edges. The overall effect is both playful and grotesque, with fine attention to textures of hair, metal and skin, set against generous empty margins.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the arched line of object-letters at the top and spot which tool makes each character. Then look to the central vignette and see how limbs become blades. Notice the soft smoky halo against the sharp metallic edges to feel the clash between fantasy and craft.
ContextContexto
This is the lithographic title page for the first portfolio of «Versuche auf Stein mit Pinsel und Schabeisen» (Essay on Stone with Brush and Scraper), published in Berlin in 1851 by German artist Adolph von Menzel (1815–1905), a leading draftsman and printmaker of the 19th century. The work is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art and is catalogued as a lithograph print. The title indicates a series of six plates in which Menzel explored brush and scraper techniques on lithographic stone. The central allegorical vignette personifies the two tools as dueling figures. No further descriptive data is provided by the source, but author, date, place and technique are documented.

Curious detailDato curioso
Menzel did not set the title in type but drew every letter from tiny renderings of his own lithographic tools, so the heading is itself a demonstration of the brush and scraper methods announced below.

I pause at the creamy paper mottled by time and the soft, smoky shading of the oval vignette, made with lithographic crayon and smudging that leaves a dark halo. I am fascinated by how Menzel made the title letters look assembled from tiny brushes, scrapers and ink blots. The textures of bristling hair, smooth skin and metal on the crossed blades show his mastery of brush and scraper on stone. It is a technical essay turned into a playful image that reveals craft and humor.

I see this cover as a small printed constellation. The oval vignette is like a planet in smoky gray where two opposite beings orbit, one shaggy and horned and the other a pale figure with wavy hair. Their legs are scraper blades crossing like eclipses over a pedestal. Above, the arched title reminds me of stars forming a pattern, but here each gothic letter is made of tiny tools. It is the first booklet of six sheets from 1851, a map of Menzel’s graphic universe.

It looks like a funny monster fight! On the left there is a grumpy furry one with horns and spiky hair as if it never combed it, and on the right a lady with short wavy hair. They hold hands and their legs are giant spatulas making an X shape. They are inside a gray oval cloud. Up top the letters are not normal letters, they are made of tiny brushes and palettes hidden like a puzzle. It makes me laugh and feel a little spooked at the same time.
