What you would seeLo que verías

Against a smooth, neutral gray background, a silver teaspoon is shown vertically and centered, filling almost the full height of the image, viewed from above with the bowl at the bottom. The bowl is elongated and oval, with thin, crisp edges and a highly polished surface that catches the light in soft white and warm highlights, with gentle shadows that model its shallow concavity and suggest light use or excellent preservation. The handle is long and slender, widening slightly toward the top into a pointed, lance-shaped tip. The entire upper face of the handle is finely engraved: at the very tip a radiating starburst or fan motif; below it a lozenge-shaped cartouche with a beaded border enclosing the hand-engraved initials S G in serif lettering; further down, stylized foliate engraving with delicate leaves and hatched lines that taper toward the stem. The stem narrows smoothly before flaring into the back of the bowl. The lighting is soft and frontal, emphasizing the cool metallic luster and the incised details without harsh glare, revealing faint polishing marks and the smooth, cool texture of silver. Scale appears small and intimate, as befits a teaspoon, with precise craftsmanship visible on close inspection.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the reflective bowl and follow the handle upward to its pointed tip. Pause at the cartouche with the initials S G and the fine engraving around it; that small personal mark turns a daily utensil into a keepsake with an owner and a story.

ContextContexto

According to source data, this silver teaspoon was made around 1790 by Rufus Farnam, an American silversmith active in Boston, Massachusetts, born in 1771. It is classified as Silver in the Decorative Art and Design department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Hollis French. No further description is provided by the source. Teaspoons of this kind were common household objects among well-off families in the early United States, often personalized with engraved initials for domestic use or as gifts. The plain bowl combined with a bright-cut engraved handle is typical of Federal-era American silver of the late eighteenth century.

Curious detailDato curioso

Pointed-handle teaspoons with hand bright-cut engraving like this one became fashionable in New England in the late 1700s and were usually engraved with the owner’s initials rather than the maker’s mark on the front.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the shine and condition of this silver. The oval bowl reflects light evenly and shows soft shadows that shape its concavity, a sign of careful polishing and excellent preservation. The long handle ends in a spear point and its entire upper face is hand engraved with fine lines. I see the almond shaped cartouche with a dotted border holding the initials S G, the stylized foliage trailing toward the neck, and the radial star at the tip. Each incision holds the pressure of the tool and speaks to handmade work.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Since I watch the sky every night, the first thing I looked for was the little star engraved at the tip of the handle. That radial fan or star motif made me smile, like a tiny constellation trapped in silver. Below it sits the almond shaped cartouche with the letters S G engraved in serif. I picture someone in 1790s Boston stirring tea and catching that glint. The polished oval bowl reflects light the way the moon does and the long slender handle seems to point upward, inviting us to look closely.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is a shiny and very fancy little spoon! It is silvery and very long, with the bottom part shaped like a stretched egg where you scoop the tea. The top ends in a little point and has tiny drawings made with thin lines. I found two hidden letters, S and G, inside a little almond with dots around it. Above the letters there is a little star. I imagine it belonged to someone special who marked the spoon so no one would take it. It looks so clean I can almost imagine my face reflected in it.
