A black-ink etching on warm, aged cream paper, framed by a wide pale margin. Occupying almost the entire image is a tall, dilapidated timber-framed house seen from a slight angle, its walls patched, cracked, and divided by dark wooden beams. The tiled roof is the dominant mass: it sags, buckles, and breaks into dormers and uneven planes drawn with short, scaly strokes. Beneath it are lean-tos, slanted awnings, open doorways, and deep black shadows made from dense cross-hatching. At center-right, small against the architecture, stands a little girl in a long light dress, head bowed, partly hidden by a doorway. In the right foreground a large mound of hay or brush is rendered as a wild tangle of looping lines. At lower left a dark, low shape suggests a sleeping dog. The uneven ground is scratched with horizontal lines. At far right, a pale blank wall or hillside contrasts with a tall ladder-like wooden structure. Fine horizontal strokes fill the sky, and the darkest blacks gather under the eaves and inside the openings.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the roofline and follow how it sags, breaks apart, and leans over the whole scene. Then look for the little girl beside the doorway: her small scale makes the building feel even more fragile and overwhelming. Finally, compare the dense black shadows with the nearly blank wall and sky at right, where the etching suddenly breathes.

ContextContexto

This print is *Twelve Etchings from Nature: The Unsafe Tenement* (1858) by James McNeill Whistler (American, 1834–1903), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art through the Bequest of James Parmelee. According to the source data, it is an etching in the Prints department. Whistler was a young American artist working in Europe, and this series of twelve etchings from nature belongs to his early printmaking, based on direct observation of everyday places. The exact location of this tenement is not given in the source data and is not known from it; the architecture suggests an old European timber-framed house, probably observed rather than invented.

Curious detailDato curioso

Look closely at the lower right: Whistler's signature is integrated into the open ground, written in the same etched lines as the scene itself rather than added like a separate label below the image.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I focus on the warm creamy paper and how the black ink clings to it. I see the half-timbered frame with its dark beams and cracked walls, and the sunken tiled roof made with short scale-like strokes. I am struck by the shadows under the eaves, built with very dense cross-hatching, and the pale margin that lets the image breathe. It is an 1858 etching, fragile and precise, where every little line tells the age of the materials.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this print as if it were an inverted night sky. The deepest blacks are under the eaves and inside the open doorways, like holes of darkness, while the sky is made of fine horizontal lines and the wall on the right remains almost empty and pale. That play of light and dark reminds me of observing contrasts. The little girl in her light dress, tiny against the huge house, feels like a faint star in front of a massive dark body that dominates everything.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This house looks crooked and very old, as if it might fall down. The roof is all sunken and covered with little marks that look like fish scales. I like to hunt for tiny things: there is a girl in a long light dress hiding by a doorway, and down on the left there looks like a sleepy little dog. On the right there is a messy pile of hay all tangled like my hair in the morning. The house is huge and the girl looks very tiny next to it.

What color is the dress of the small figure standing by the doorway on the center-right?

    HintPista

Look to the center-right, it is the only human figure and it stands out against the dark shadows of the house.

  2. #2

What animal seems to be sleeping on the uneven ground at the bottom left?

    HintPista

Check the low dark shape in the foreground on the left, on the hatched ground.

  3. #3

What large dark tangled mass fills the right foreground, made with messy curved lines?

    HintPista

Look to the right, in front of the sheds, for a dense tangle of curved lines.
