What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white print on cream paper, in vertical format, showing a man standing and facing forward, taking up almost the full height of the image. He wears a soft hat, has dark curly hair reaching his ears, a short beard and a moustache, and looks directly at the viewer with a serious expression. He is dressed in a broad, light garment with barely suggested folds that wraps around his torso and falls downward, blurring the boundaries of his body. In front of him, set diagonally, rises the neck of a large stringed instrument, probably a cello, whose scroll can be made out beside his right shoulder; its pale, ghostly body occupies the lower centre with no defined details. Everything is drawn with fine, loose, interwoven lines: on the left and at the edges there are dense hatchings, almost dark scribbles, while the background remains light, streaked horizontally. The light does not come from any visible source, but from the contrast between paper and black ink. Around the image the unprinted paper is visible, slightly irregular at the edges. The overall impression is of a deliberately unfinished, vibrant portrait, where the face and the scroll are the sharpest elements and everything else dissolves into strokes.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the face, the most firmly drawn area, and then follow the diagonal neck of the instrument down. Notice how the body of both man and cello gradually dissolves into loose lines. The dense scribble on the left is not a mistake: it creates the shadow that makes the pale figure emerge.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as Becquet, an etching and drypoint from 1871 by James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), an American artist, held at the Cleveland Museum of Art through the bequest of James Parmelee. It is catalogued in the Prints department. Whistler was a leading figure in nineteenth-century printmaking and helped revive etching as an autonomous artistic medium. The title suggests the sitter's surname; he was probably a musician, as the instrument beside him indicates, although the source provides no further information about his identity or about where the print was made.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the cello, despite its large size, is almost a ghost — its scroll is clearly visible by the man's shoulder, while its body fades into the paper with barely a few lines.

I linger on how the creamy paper shows through the black ink, the horizontal hatching lets the surface breathe while the dense scribbled shading on the left holds the figure like temporary scaffolding. The face and the scroll by the right shoulder are the sharpest passages, everything else melts into barely suggested folds and a pale ghostly body of the instrument in the lower center. I love the uneven unprinted margins, they remind us this is an 1871 etching and drypoint meant to look unfinished, a vibrant sketch where contrast does all the work of light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this portrait like a night sky drawn in ink, the creamy paper is the firmament and the black lines are constellations barely outlining a shape. The serious face and the scroll by the right shoulder shine like two guide stars, the clearest points inside a nebula of loose crosshatched strokes. The pale ghostly body of the cello in the center looks like a half formed eclipse. What fascinates me is that light does not come from a visible source but from contrast itself, like dawn cutting silhouettes against a bright background.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This man looks at me so seriously with his soft hat and little beard, it seems he is posing and does not want to smile. Next to him there is a huge cello but it looks erased, you only see clearly the little curl on top called the scroll, the rest is very pale like a ghost. I like how it is made with little lines everywhere, some very close and dark on the left that look like scribbles. You can tell they did not finish it but that is what makes it pretty, like someone drew it quickly while the man was waiting.
