What you would seeLo que verías
Centered against a soft gradient background from dark charcoal to light gray, an albarello jar stands alone. Its body is cylindrical with softened octagonal facets, straight walls, slightly sloped shoulders, a short flared neck with a gently wavy rim, and a narrow foot ring, suggesting a height of about twenty centimeters. The surface is heavily weathered and archaeological in character. Large areas of the glaze are missing, revealing a matte, off-white to ivory fritware body stained with brown concretions and age spots. Where preserved, a vivid turquoise glaze shines with emerald and bluish iridescence, especially on the shoulder, neck and in vertical panels. On the front facet a rectangular cartouche outlined in black contains black scrollwork with paired dots and curling arabesque forms on the turquoise ground. Similar dark linear decoration traces the edges of the facets. Soft studio lighting from the front creates a gentle shadow beneath the base and highlights the rough, pitted, crazed texture, the chipped rim, the uneven glaze thickness and the tactile contrast between glossy surviving enamel and powdery, eroded ceramic.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the overall faceted silhouette and the patchy interplay of ivory and turquoise. Then focus on the front panel and trace the surviving black scrolls. Let your eye move to the rim and foot to appreciate how wear and remaining glaze together tell the story of age and making.

Curious detailDato curioso
Fritware, often called stonepaste, is not true clay but a quartz-based body developed by Islamic potters to imitate the whiteness of Chinese porcelain, and Raqqa potters were among its most skilled early producers.

What moves me about this jar is what time has done to it. I see the crackled and flaking turquoise glaze, with brownish stains and areas where the pale ivory paste shows through. The surface is rough, porous, full of chips and losses. Yet that front panel survives, framed by a double black line with spiraling motifs that suggest stylized arabesques. It is quartz fritware, fragile and solid at once, and every crack tells its archaeological story.

I look at this faceted albarello and think about pigments and light. That intense turquoise glaze, almost emerald with bluish iridescence, reminds me of the color of certain nebulae seen through a filter. The softened octagonal body, with its short flared neck and ring base, catches the front light and casts soft shadows that emphasize each facet. The contrast between the remaining shiny glaze and the dull eroded paste is like seeing a planet with light and shadow zones.

It looks like a little cup for keeping treasures but it is all old and scratched. It is as tall as a ruler and has many flat faces on the sides, like an octagon. Some parts shine in a pretty turquoise green and others look whitish and brownish with crusty patches. On the front it has a little drawing with black spirals, like curly little worms. I like to imagine what they kept inside it so many years ago.
Me gusta imaginar qué guardaban ahí hace muchísimos años.
