Hamlet Rushes to Follow the Ghost of His FatherHamlet se lanza a seguir el fantasma de su padre
Eugène Delacroix (French, 1798–1863) · 1835 · France, 19th century
lithograph
What you would seeLo que verías
A dramatic black-and-white lithograph with dense, expressive hatching. In the foreground, three young men are locked in an urgent struggle at the center of the composition. Hamlet, with wavy hair and a long dark cloak trailing on the ground, lunges to the left with arm outstretched and face turned toward a luminous apparition; his forward-leaning body is barely restrained by two companions gripping his shoulders and waist. One, in a light doublet with patterned sleeves and metal knee guards, raises both hands in alarm and pleading; the other, wearing a plumed helmet and carrying a halberd on his back, clings to him from behind with a fearful expression. To the left, on a stone parapet, hovers the ghost of the king — a translucent, glowing figure in armor with arms open. Behind them, a ruined castle rises against craggy cliffs and a night sky rendered with crosshatched shading. The flagstone ground in the foreground is brightly lit, casting sharp shadows and revealing a fallen spear. The signature Eug. Delacroix 1835 appears at lower left. Rough textures on rocks, metallic highlights and finely detailed feathers complete the theatrical scene.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow Hamlet's outstretched arm toward the glowing ghost on the left, then return to the knot of bodies restraining him. Notice the strained faces and the fallen spear on the ground — a small detail that emphasizes haste and danger.
ContextContexto
Work by French painter and lithographer Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863), a leading figure of Romanticism, dated 1835. It belongs to a series of lithographs inspired by William Shakespeare's Hamlet, a play especially admired by Romantics for its psychological intensity and supernatural elements. The scene depicts Act I, when the ghost of Hamlet's father appears on the platform at Elsinore and Hamlet tries to follow it while Horatio and Marcellus attempt to hold him back. The lithographic technique, widely used in 19th-century France, allowed Delacroix to explore strong light-dark contrasts and theatrical gestures. The print is housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

If you look closely at the paper, you see how Delacroix plays with black and white lithography. The light does not come from a lamp, but from the ghost in armor and from the brightly lit stone slabs that cast sharp shadows. I focus on the contrasts between the deep black of Hamlet's cloak and the mid-grays of the sky with cross-hatching. The rough textures on the rocks, the shine on the halberd and the plumed helmet, and the intense strokes from 1835 reveal his mastery of Romantic chiaroscuro.

What captivates me most is that night. The sky is worked with dark cross-hatching that suggests a cold terrace at Elsinore, and against that darkness floats the luminous ghost of the king in armor, arms open as if it were a constellation. Hamlet leans toward that light as if pulled by gravity. The two companions holding him seem to anchor him to earth, while the ruined castle and the crags remind us how small we are before the mystery of what shines in the dark.

It looks like they are playing catch me if you can! Hamlet wants to run toward the shiny ghost and his two friends hold him tight so he does not go. One shouts with his hands up and the other hugs him from behind with his feathered helmet. The ghost in armor floats on a little stone like moonlight. Down below there is a spear lying on the floor. It scares me a little but it is also exciting, like when you tell ghost stories with a flashlight at night.
