What you would seeLo que verías

The work occupies a long horizontal sheet of yellowish cream paper, enclosed by a thin brown frame. On this almost empty background, drawn in brown ink, a crowd of heads and half-figures overlaps from left to right. At the far left, an older curly-haired, bearded man in profile looks toward the group; his clothing is indicated with only a few long, loose lines. Next to him appears a veiled face with downcast eyes, followed by several barely sketched heads that emerge between shadows and contours. At center, another mature, curly-haired man lowers his face with a somber expression, beside a woman who looks straight out. The most solid figure occupies the right foreground: a bearded man seen from behind and in profile, with abundant hair, a checkered sleeve, one hand held to his chest, and the other arm stretched out forcefully toward the right edge, his index finger extended. Dense hatching models his clothing, in contrast with the airy emptiness of the lower half. The paper shows stains, slight creases, a small mark at lower left, a dark seal at lower right, and a handwritten inscription in that corner.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the row of heads from left to right and notice how the drawing grows denser and darker toward the foreground figure. Then look for the faces that are barely suggested among the complete profiles. The outstretched arm on the right changes the scene: what seemed like a simple exercise begins to feel like a confrontation or an urgent conversation.

ContextContexto

Study of Heads (recto) is attributed to Agostino Carracci (1557–1602), an Italian artist of the second half of the 16th century. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is executed in pen and brown ink, with framing lines in the same ink, and was a gift of Robert Hays Gries. Sheets of this kind served to practice faces, ages, expressions, and groupings before or during the development of larger compositions. It is not known whether these heads were preparatory for a specific painting, nor who they represent; probably they form a workshop study rather than an independent finished scene.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What kind of encounter might be taking place between the figure with the outstretched arm and the group facing him?¿Qué tipo de encuentro podría estar ocurriendo entre la figura del brazo extendido y el grupo que tiene enfrente?
  2. How does the meaning change when some faces are fully described and others remain mere sketches?¿Cómo cambia el sentido cuando unos rostros están muy descritos y otros quedan como simples esbozos?
  3. If you had to choose one head as the emotional center of the sheet, which would it be, and why?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the yellowish cream paper and its thin brown frame, because they tell the history of the sheet. I see stains, soft creases, and a small mark at the bottom left that speaks of time and handling. The brown ink was applied with a pen, sometimes in loose lines and sometimes in dense crosshatching, especially on the sleeve of the man at right. I notice the dark stamp at the bottom and the handwritten inscription, traces of its past and of the donation.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this horizontal sheet like an almost empty night sky where heads cluster together like a star cluster. From left to right profiles, veils and lowered gazes emerge among shadows, like stars of different brightness. At the center somber faces gravitate together, and at right a more solid, darker figure seems to anchor the composition, with his arm stretched pointing beyond the frame, as if marking a boundary of the drawn universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a tight line of people drawn in brown ink on light paper. On the left there is an old man with a curly beard and hair seen from the side. Then many heads peek out, some with eyes closed and others looking serious. My favorite is the man on the right who is seen from behind but turns his face, with one hand on his chest and the other arm stretching his finger as if saying over there! Below there is a lot of empty space.
