On nearly square, beige paper with visible margins, the corner of a rustic room is shown without any human figures. Two vertical elements organize the image: at left, a pale wooden ladder leaning against the wall, and just right of center, the large circular wheel of a spinning wheel. Draped over an upper rung of the ladder is a length of orange-red cloth with uneven edges, the only strong color in the sheet. In the lower foreground, a low, roughly made bench is covered with loose tufts of white and pale-blue wool; resting on it are two dark, flat, rectangular carders. Beside the wheel are a spindle, small turned-wood parts, and a fine thread dropping toward the wool. The background wall dissolves into grey and ochre washes, where hanging clothes or sacks are only faintly suggested. From the upper right edge hangs a heavy black chain with thick links, cropped by the border. Soft light from the left brightens the wheel and fleece while leaving smoky shadows behind. Graphite, brown ink, translucent watercolor, and touches of gouache create both precise details and unfinished, sketch-like areas. The artist’s signature and date appear in handwriting at lower right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the large wheel at the center, then move left toward the red cloth that anchors the color of the scene. Look closely at the loose wool and the flat carders on the bench: this is not mere decoration, but work waiting to be resumed. At the edges, notice the ladder and the chain cropped by the frame, suggesting a larger room beyond the drawing.

ContextContexto

Sir David Wilkie (1785–1841), described by the source as one of the great draftsmen of the British school, made this work in 1835 as a study for a painting exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1836: “The Peep-O’-Day Boys’ Cabin, in the West of Ireland,” also known as “The Sleeping Whiteboy.” According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Wilkie painted slowly but drew prolifically, relying on studies to develop his compositions. This sheet explores one corner of an Irish cabin where wool was processed. The exact location of the interior is not known; it was probably observed or reconstructed as preparation for the final painting.

Curious detailDato curioso

The artist’s signature and a precise date, 12 November 1835, can be read at lower right — evidence of how carefully Wilkie documented the preparatory studies on which his paintings depended.

I pause on how this corner is made. It is graphite, brown ink and translucent watercolor on beige paper, almost square, with the margins still visible. Soft light comes from the left and brightens the spinning wheel and the wool fleeces, while gray and ochre washes leave the background hazy and barely sketched. I am drawn to that reddish orange cloth hanging on the ladder: it is the only intense color and seems placed on purpose to test contrast. There are no figures, as if the study kept the trace of textile work.

I look at this corner as if it were a night sky on pause. The large wheel of the spinning wheel reminds me of a quiet sun, a perfect circle in the middle of gloom, with its thin thread dropping like a faint ray. The chain hanging from above, cut off by the edge, looks like an incomplete constellation disappearing beyond the paper. The pale ladder is a scale for measuring shadow and the light coming from the left. With no people, the room becomes an observatory of the everyday, waiting for something to spin again.

This room looks a bit dark and quiet, with no one inside. What I like most is the reddish orange cloth hanging on the ladder, because it is the only strong color and looks like a little flag. Below there is a small bench with fluffy white and bluish wool, and on top two dark little things that are carders for combing the wool. In the middle is the big spinning wheel that looks like a giant tire. At the top right hangs a black chain with thick links. I imagine someone stepped out for a moment and left everything ready to keep spinning.
