What you would seeLo que verías
The image is an etching and drypoint print, made with black and brown inks on a cream-colored paper support. The scene represents the dim interior of a wooden workshop, seen from an elevated or distant viewpoint. The composition is built on various planes: in the foreground, on the right side, there is a workbench or sawhorse with boards; in the central ground, two figures appear working among beams and ladders; and in the background, a bright rectangular opening lets in light that contrasts with the interior gloom. The structure of the workshop is defined by large vertical posts, horizontal beams and a pitched roof, cut out with severe geometry. Two tall ladders lean against the walls, reinforcing the sense of height and depth. The light enters from the bottom opening, creating strong backlighting that silhouettes the figures and projects long shadows. The technique shows visible lines, cross-hatching and drypoint that give texture and darkness to the shadows. The tones range from creamy white paper to deep black, through browns and greys. In the lower left corner the signature 'D.Y. Cameron 1911' is distinguished and in the lower right margin another handwritten signature. The atmosphere is industrial and melancholic, with small workers consumed by the vast space.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, stand back to appreciate the global composition: the way the darkness of the workshop frames the interior space and directs the gaze toward the distant gleam of light. Then observe each character and try to determine what gesture defines them, even though their faces are just brief strokes.

Curious detailDato curioso
The image presents an intriguing detail: we see the figures from afar, working, but we cannot distinguish their faces; Cameron represents them more as silhouettes in shadow than as defined portraits, which reinforces the prominence of the space over individual identity.

What holds me here is the craft printed on cream paper. I see the black and brown inks of etching and drypoint, with visible lines and cross-hatching that build shadow and texture. The light coming through the rectangular opening at the back contrasts with the gloom and turns everything else into cut-out shapes. I am struck by how D. Y. Cameron in 1911 holds the severe geometry of posts and beams while keeping the handmade vibration of the line alive across the surface.

For me this workshop is an inverted observatory. Instead of looking at the sky, we look into an interior darkness pierced by a luminous rectangle at the back that works like a distant star. The horizontal beams, vertical posts and sloped roof form a rigid architectural constellation. Two tall ladders are like instruments leaning and waiting to measure height. The two small figures are silhouetted against the light, tiny against the immensity, just like us under the night sky.

This workshop looks like a giant house made of dark sticks. I see lots of lines forming posts and beams as if it were a wooden fort. At the back there is a bright doorway that looks like a window full of light and makes everything feel mysterious. There are two very tiny people working between very tall ladders and a bench with planks on the right. I like to imagine I am hiding up high, watching everything from far away without anyone seeing me.
