A Peasant Replying: 'That's Nothing', probably 1634Un campesino responde: «eso no es nada», probablemente 1634

etching
What you would seeLo que verías
A narrow vertical etching in black ink on aged cream paper with slightly irregular, foxed edges. In the foreground, dominating the height of the composition, a man stands in right-facing profile with his body slightly hunched and his hands behind his back. He wears a soft, slouchy cap, a thick and tangled beard, and loose, ragged clothing: a heavy jacket with pronounced folds, baggy trousers gathered at the calf, and worn, broad-soled boots. A small bulging pouch hangs from his belt. The line work is energetic and dense, with cross-hatching that builds volume in the fabrics and deep shadows beneath his feet. His face is rendered in a caricatural manner, with a prominent nose, a half-open mouth and a shaggy beard, as if he is speaking or chuckling. At the top, handwritten text in old Dutch and a signature with a date are etched into the plate. In the lower right background, rendered at a tiny scale, a second peasant seen from behind, wearing a similar cap, stands near what appears to be a canal bank. The light is flat, typical of printmaking, with no detailed sky, only the white of the paper reserved as background.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First notice the contrast in scale between the large, heavily detailed peasant in the foreground and the tiny solitary figure in the background. Follow the etched lines in the beard and the folds of clothing, where dense hatching builds texture and weight. Consider the expression on his face and how the text above turns a portrait into an imagined exchange.
ContextContexto
This is an etching by Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669), probably dated 1634, according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art where it is housed in the Prints department. The inscription at the top, 'Dats niet' — translated as 'that's nothing' — and the signature 'Rembrandt' with a date are part of the etched plate and give the work its title. Rembrandt was a highly prolific printmaker during the Dutch Golden Age and made many studies of popular types and peasants, often with a satirical or physiognomic interest. No further specific information about the circumstances of creation is provided in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
Rembrandt signed and dated this plate directly with the etching needle, so the handwriting and the date '163' in the upper right appear in reverse from the printing process, showing his distinctive script.

What draws me in is the aged cream paper and the black etching ink. Look at the irregular, slightly stained edges and the nervous, cross-hatched lines that give volume to the thick jacket and baggy pants. The light is flat, typical of printmaking, leaving the background as blank paper. At the top you can read the handwritten inscription Dats niet and the signature with date. It is a fragile print that has survived for almost four centuries.

Even without a sky, I like to see this print as an observation. In the foreground, the man in profile fills almost the whole height, slightly hunched with hands behind his back, as if scanning the horizon. In the background, tiny in the lower right corner, there is another figure by what looks like a canal. It is a play of scales, like seeing a constellation and then a small detail. The inscription at the top is our label, like a title on an old map.

This man looks funny with his wrinkled hat like a sock, his messy beard and big nose. It seems like he is saying something with his mouth open and laughing. His clothes are very baggy with lots of folds, and he has a little pouch hanging from his belt. Did you see it? And if you look closely, down on the right there is another tiny peasant seen from behind, almost hidden. I like that the drawing is made only with little black lines.
