Christ Driving the Money Changers from the TempleCristo expulsando a los mercaderes del Templo

etching
What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal black-and-white etching on aged cream paper, executed with dense, energetic cross-hatching. At the center stands Christ, torso twisted, arms raised high holding a whip of cords; short white radiating lines burst from his figure, dividing the composition. He is surrounded by a tumultuous crowd inside a grand temple with massive rounded arches and thick piers. In the foreground, several men tumble and flee: one balances a large basket on his head, another is overturned with a table spilling coins across the ground, a small barrel rolls on its side. To the right, cattle and sheep thrash among legs, a small dog barks, and a man lies face down on the floor. In the middle distance on the right, merchants with turbans and beards watch stunned from a raised platform, while on the left a deep vaulted arcade recedes toward a hanging lamp. Light is starkly contrasted, shadows built from tight hatching and reserved whites for dramatic effect. The surface feels textured and granular, typical of etched lines, conveying wrinkled fabrics, stone, dust and fur. The artist's handwritten signature Rembrandt f. 1635 appears at the lower right, anchoring the chaotic scene with a delicate inscription.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the central illuminated figure with the raised whip and follow the outward spiral of falling bodies and overturned furniture. Notice the contrast between the frantic foreground with scattered coins and animals and the frozen onlookers on the platform behind. Pay attention to how etched rays of light turn a single gesture into the organizing force of the entire architectural space.

As recorded in the source data, this is an etching by Rembrandt van Rijn, dated 1635, from the Netherlands, held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art as a Gift of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. It depicts the Gospel episode of Jesus clearing the Temple in Jerusalem of money changers and merchants. The work belongs to Rembrandt's prolific printmaking activity in the 1630s, marked by Baroque drama and expressive crowd scenes. Look at the aged cream paper and the dense, restless etching lines. This 1635 print is full of movement, but what stops me is the light: Rembrandt leaves the paper white to create the glow around Christ and uses cross-hatching for the deep shadows under the arcade. Notice the rough texture, the wrinkled fabrics, the dust suggested by built-up lines. At the lower right you can still read the signature Rembrandt f. 1635, proof of how much he valued his work as a printmaker.

For me this scene is a burst of light in darkness. Christ at the center is like a sun with white rays splitting the composition in two and everything spins around him. The temple with its monumental arches reminds me of an old observatory, with its hanging lamp like a small moon. The crowd flees like comets scattered by a central force. Rembrandt, in the full Baroque period, understood that light does not just illuminate, it also pushes, separates and tells the story.

So much is happening here and everyone is running! Jesus is in the middle with a whip in his hands and he looks really angry. One man falls with a basket on his head, another knocks over a table and coins fly everywhere, a barrel is lying on the ground. The little animals are scared too, the oxen and sheep huddle together and there is even a tiny dog barking. In the back some men with turbans watch with their mouths open. It is like a movie frozen right at the moment of chaos!
