plain weave with inwoven tapestry weave: linen and silk
What you would seeLo que verías
A rectangular, almost square textile fragment is shown mounted on a cream-colored support cloth that fills the entire background. The light is even and frontal, as in museum photography, revealing the fine weave and small breaks in the surface. In the foreground, the original fabric, in an ivory tone, is heavily worn and has large areas missing. It is organized into three main horizontal sections, separated by empty zones where only the support remains. Each section combines wide bands with narrow borders. In the wide bands, wavy ribbons — a guilloche motif — interlace in dark green, indigo blue, golden ochre, and wine red, forming ovals and continuous waves. Within those spaces, small circular and triangular motifs repeat, some resembling stylized eyes or flowers. The narrow borders, in dark red with cream, green, and gold details, contain a succession of small rounded forms that are difficult to read because of the deterioration. The edges are irregular, frayed, and fragmented; there are separate islands of fabric in the center and lower right. Pale beige and light brown stains appear at the corners and along the lower edge, together with loose threads and uneven surfaces that reveal both the age and the fragility of the linen and silk. No scale is given, but the work is presented as a fragment, not as a complete garment.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the horizontal bands from left to right and notice how the interlaced ribbons repeat despite the losses. Then look at the narrow borders, where a much smaller rhythm frames the larger one. The empty areas are also part of the reading: they show that what survives is a fragment, not the original whole.
ContextContexto
The source identifies this piece as a tiraz with guilloche bands, made in Egypt during the Fatimid period and dated between 1075 and 1125. Its author is unknown. According to the museum record, it was made with plain weave and inwoven tapestry weave, combining linen and silk, and it now belongs to the Textiles Department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of The Textile Arts Club. Tiraz textiles were characteristically banded fabrics associated with garments and court production in the medieval Islamic world. In this example, no clearly legible inscription can be made out in the image, so its precise original use is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although tiraz are often known for their inscriptions, this fragment draws attention above all through its guilloche: interlaced ribbons that create a continuous, almost endless rhythm without a single center.

From my work table I see a very fragile ivory fragment mounted on a cream support that holds it together. I worry about the large missing areas between the three main horizontal bands and the frayed edges with loose threads. The weave combines linen and silk in plain weave with tapestry sections where interlaced ribbons appear in green, indigo blue, ochre and wine red. I notice beige and brown stains that speak of the passage of time and the need for even, stable light to preserve it.

When I look at those bands I cannot help thinking of orbits. The wavy guilloche ribbons in dark green, indigo blue, golden ochre and wine red form continuous ovals that look like intertwined trajectories. Inside those ovals there are small circular motifs, like eyes or stylized flowers, that remind me of planets or stars within their orbits. There are three main horizontal bands separated by empty spaces, like fragmented constellations. It is a geometric sky woven in linen and silk centuries ago in Egypt.

It looks like a little old and broken blanket glued onto a cream fabric so it does not fall apart anymore. I see three big stripes lying down with many empty holes in between and edges that are all frayed. In the stripes there are colorful snakes in green, blue, gold and red that cross each other making waves and little eyes. The thin borders are red with cream dots. There are brown stains in the corners and many little loose threads. I like to look for the tiny eyes hidden inside the waves.

What two natural fibers does this Fatimid tiraz combine according to the museum record?
HintPista
One is a cool plant fiber and the other is a shiny fiber made by a silkworm, both woven in plain weave and tapestry.
