What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal black-and-white lithograph presents the massive Romanesque abbey church of Tournus seen from a town square. The stone complex dominates the center, anchored by two steep-roofed towers; the nearer tower in the middle ground is rendered with careful cross-hatching, showing blind arcades, round-arched windows, tiled roofs and weathered masonry, while a rounded apse with a gallery of small arches appears to the left. A soft, cloudy sky filled with diffuse washes and fine lines spreads above, its light gently modeling the building's volumes in nuanced grays. In the foreground, a crowd of tiny figures in long dresses, cloaks and hats gathers for a market: baskets, makeshift stalls, seated vendors and standing groups animate the square, providing a vivid sense of daily life and human scale against the monument. Flanking the square, modest houses with overhanging eaves, wooden balconies and uneven façades frame the view and lead the eye inward. The lithographic texture is granular and atmospheric, with delicate tonal transitions, and the sheet shows the printed caption below and a small handwritten plate number at the top, confirming its origin as a book illustration.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large central tower and trace the long nave to the distant second tower to grasp the building's scale. Then look down to the small market crowd in the foreground and notice how those tiny figures make the stone architecture feel even more monumental.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on technique: this is a black and white lithograph with a granular texture and gray gradations that shape the stone. I notice the fine linework on the roof tiles and arcades, the soft cloudy sky with blended shading, and the small spots and handwritten numbering in the upper margin, traces of its life as a book print. The gentle light reveals the solid mass of the towers and the apse, and makes me think about how to preserve that contrast between pale paper and dark ink without losing detail.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I look first at the sky, which fills almost half the image with cottony clouds and soft, blended strokes. There is no sun or stars, just an even gentle light falling on the stone and the market, typical of an overcast day. That diffuse light without sharp shadows helps me imagine the time of day, perhaps mid-morning, when the crowd in hats and cloaks gathers in the square. I love how the vastness of the sky makes the two pointed towers look even more monumental against the low houses around them.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The church looks like a giant castle! It has two towers with pointy tops and lots of little windows and big stones. Down below there are lots of tiny people with hats and long skirts who look like little ants at the market, with baskets and stalls. On the sides there are small houses with wooden balconies. The sky is full of fluffy clouds and everything is in white, black and gray, like an old coloring book. I imagine running in the square and looking up because the tower is so huge.

The print is in black and white, but if you look at the described palette, what light gray tone corresponds to the paper?

    HintPista

It is the lightest color in the list, almost ivory, typical of the paper background.
