Zinc lithograph

What you would seeLo que verías

A zinc lithograph in graphite tones on cream paper depicting five peasant women working around a large haystack. At the centre, the straw forms a bulky, dark mound, shaded with dense cross-hatching that conveys volume and rough texture. Three figures are perched on top: a standing woman in a long skirt and broad-brimmed hat dominates the composition, leaning forward; beside her, two companions crouch as they arrange hay with their hands. At the base of the stack, two more women labor: on the left, a stooped figure gathering sheaves, only lightly sketched; on the right, in sharp foreground focus, a woman in a cap and apron holds a long rake, her body tensed and eyes cast down. The background opens onto a rural landscape rendered with light strokes: a smaller distant haystack, rounded trees, low houses, and a sky with soft, loosely shaded clouds. The light is diffuse, like midday, without strong shadows. The drawing combines nervous linear marks and velvety tonal areas typical of zinc lithography, with a signature «P.» at lower left and handwritten notations in the lower margin.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large, dark central haystack and follow the triangle of bodies around it. Then pause on the woman with the rake in the foreground: her curved posture sums up the collective effort. Notice how the mark-making shifts from dense and heavy at the centre to light and almost airy in the distant landscape.

ContextContexto

This is a work by French painter and printmaker Camille Pissarro (1830–1903), dated around 1896 and executed as a zinc lithograph. It belongs to his final period in Éragny-sur-Epte, a village in northern France where he lived from 1884 until his death and where he repeatedly depicted farm labor. The print is part of the Prints collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Pissarro, a central figure in Impressionism and later Neo-Impressionism, maintained a steady interest in dignified rural work without picturesque idealization. The source provides no further details about edition or state beyond technique and approximate date.

Curious detailDato curioso

In his last decade Pissarro devoted himself intensively to etching and lithography, making over a hundred rural prints, often working outdoors from life as he did with his paintings, with Éragny as his most frequent subject.

I focus on the material of this zincograph from around 1896. The cream paper, tone #E8E0C9, holds a balance between nervous lines and velvety smudges typical of lithography on zinc. Look at the central haystack: it is built with dense cross-hatching that creates volume and that rough texture of straw. The signature with «P.» at the lower left and the handwritten notes in the margin remind us this is a print made to be reproduced.

I am drawn to how Pissarro captures the diffuse midday light in Éragny-sur-Epte. There are no sharp shadows, only soft shading in that sky with loose clouds you see in the background. That pale sky contrasts with the dark, bulky haystack at the center. If you look closely, you find the lightly sketched horizon with another small haystack, rounded trees and low houses. It is a farm landscape that feels suspended under an even, calm light.

It looks like a mountain of hay! I see five peasant women working together and I like counting them. Three are on top of the haystack, as if they were on a hilltop. One stands with a big hat and the other two are crouched arranging straw with their hands. Below there are two more, and one holds a long rake and wears a cap and apron. You can tell they are working hard together and the hay is scratchy and heavy.

¡Parece una montaña de heno! Veo a cinco campesinas trabajando juntas y me gusta contarlas.
