Linen: needle lace and bobbin lace (Point Duchesse)

What you would seeLo que verías

A fully opened folding fan forms a perfect semicircle against a deep black background that emphasizes its pale luminosity. The leaf, the upper lace section, is made of ivory and off-white linen, with varying density that creates delicate transparencies. At the center, an oval medallion holds a finely embroidered floral bouquet — roses, leaves and slender stems — appearing to float on an almost invisible tulle mesh. Around it, the lace spreads in symmetrical botanical motifs: openwork leaves, rosettes and scrolls, connected by fine brides that reveal the dark backdrop. The upper edge is scalloped, with irregular points and curves giving a frothy, airy outline. At the base, the sticks converge at a small gilded rivet with a hanging metal loop. The sticks are made of iridescent mother-of-pearl, flashing with pink, green and gold hues; the inner guards are decorated with gilded inlays and engraved floral patterns. Soft lighting brings out the three-dimensional texture of the lace, its subtle reliefs and shadows, and the pearly sheen of the mother-of-pearl.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central medallion and follow the mother-of-pearl sticks upward to see how the lace unfolds like a garden. Notice the contrast between dense, opaque areas and sheer, transparent ones where needle and bobbin work meet. Look closely at the shifting iridescence of the sticks at the base, a cool counterpoint to the soft matte linen.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a lace fan from Brussels, Belgium, dating to the 1800s by an unknown maker. It is made of linen using the Point Duchesse technique, which combines needle lace and bobbin lace, a highly prized specialty of the period. Such fans were luxury accessories for elite women, worn at balls and formal events, valued for both artisanal skill and social status. The piece entered the collection as a gift of Mrs. Albert D. Levy. No specific information about its original owner or use is recorded, but it is representative of 19th-century Belgian textile production, world-renowned for its fineness.

Curious detailDato curioso

Point Duchesse, also called Point de Bruxelles, is not a single lace type but a hybrid technique: it combines needle and bobbin lace to create raised flowers and leaves with a three-dimensional volume that neither technique alone can achieve.

I focus on what this fan reveals about handwork. Its leaf is made of linen in ivory and bone white tones, crafted with Point Duchesse, a technique that combines needle lace and bobbin lace. Notice the central medallion with roses and fine leaves on an almost invisible tulle mesh, and the scalloped edge with points that creates that foamy effect. The iridescent mother of pearl sticks converge at a golden rivet and support everything with lightness and strength.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This fan reminds me of looking at the sky through a telescope. Against a deep black background, the white lace expands like a symmetrical constellation of plant motifs and rosettes. The oval medallion at the center is like a flowery nebula, with scrolls and connecting stitches that let darkness show through the threads. The mother of pearl sticks, with pinkish and greenish glimmers, converge toward the golden rivet like rays of a star. It is a semicircle that seems to float in the night.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a princess fan made of white foam. If you look closely, you see many flowers and little leaves that seem to float in the air because the background is black. The edge has little points like waves and in the middle there is a bouquet of roses inside an oval. At the bottom it has shiny sticks that change to pink and green like a seashell and join at a little golden dot with a tiny ring. I want to open and close it gently to make wind.
