wood engraving
What you would seeLo que verías
A black-and-white wood engraving on aged, cream-colored paper, in horizontal format with rounded upper corners. The scene fills a country road beneath leafy trees, built from dense parallel lines and cross-hatching that create shadow, foliage, and texture. In the right foreground, a woman in profile wears a dark fitted jacket, an ornate hat, and a very full light-colored riding skirt that covers much of her horse; the horse lowers its head and raises one front leg. At center, another woman rides toward the viewer, wearing a hat with veiling or ribbons and holding the reins, her dark skirt spreading over the horse's flank. To the left, a boy with a basket of flowers on his arm reaches up to offer a small bouquet to her. Beside him, other children carry a crate and baskets, and girls in light dresses watch. Behind them, a mustached man on horseback raises one arm. Further back, more riders move away down the sunlit path, growing smaller between trunks and bushes. At the lower edge, strong shadows mark the dusty road. Below the image, capital letters read “MAY-DAY IN THE COUNTRY.”
Abajo, en mayúsculas, se lee: “MAY-DAY IN THE COUNTRY.”
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the two women on horseback in the foreground and notice how differently their horses behave: one looks straight ahead, while the other bows its head and lifts a foreleg. Then move to the boy offering a flower and follow the path into the background, where smaller riders disappear among the trees.
ContextContexto
May Day in the Country, dated 1859, is a wood engraving by American artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds the print through a purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund, Homer made it early in his career. The image itself shows that it was published in Harper's Weekly: the magazine's name, the date April 30, 1859, and the page number 280 appear along the right margin. It depicts a May Day outing in the countryside, a spring celebration. The precise place shown is not known; the scene is probably a lively, idealized gathering rather than a record of a specific documented event.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual detail: on the tree at far left hangs a small sign reading “Belmont,” almost hidden among fine engraved lines, hats, and a hanging wreath — a reward for looking slowly.

I pause on the yellowed paper with its rounded top corners and how parallel lines and cross-hatching create everything: the shadows, the foliage, the dusty ground. It is a black-and-white wood engraving, and what stands out is the contrast between the dark ink and the aged creamy background. Look at the two horsewomen in the foreground: one in profile with a very wide light-colored riding skirt, the other facing forward with a dark skirt. The wear of the paper itself also tells the story of its time in Harper's Weekly in 1859.

Although this scene is daytime, it makes me think about light and shadow. The dense hatching works like an inverted starry sky: where there are more lines, there is more darkness, like a night under the leafy trees. The path brightens in the background and the riders become tiny among the trunks, which creates a sense of depth and distance. It is from 1859, from Winslow Homer's early career, and I like to imagine how that light filtered through branches would also mark the hours for those celebrating spring in the countryside.

I love the horses! The one on the right is lowering its head and lifting a little leg, as if saying hello. The lady riding it has a huge, very light skirt that covers almost the whole horse, it looks like a fluffy dress. In the middle there is another horsewoman coming toward us with her hat with a veil. And on the left a boy offers her little flowers from a basket. In the back there are more kids with boxes and more riders getting tiny along the little path between the trees. At the bottom it says MAY-DAY IN THE COUNTRY.
Se lee abajo MAY-DAY IN THE COUNTRY.
