The piece is a black-and-white print on a large sheet of cream-colored paper, shown against a dark background. The paper is aged and slightly irregular, with torn or worn upper and lower corners, handwritten notes, and a small stamp at lower right. At the top it reads “HARPER'S WEEKLY,” and in the middle, in large decorative lettering, “A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.” The whole image is enclosed by a lush frame of holly leaves, berries, and vines that organizes several scenes. At the center, inside an oval, a luminous woman holding a child receives kneeling visitors in a dim interior, in a Nativity-like scene. At upper left, elegant horse-drawn carriages pass along an urban avenue with tall buildings; at upper right, in a snowy landscape, a goat pulls a small sled carrying children, followed by a dog. The lower half is the largest and liveliest scene: a brightly lit hall where many children dance in pairs and in a circle, watched by adults. At left, a woman in a voluminous skirt moves as if dancing or guiding the group; at right, there is a decorated Christmas tree, seated adults, and children in formal dress. The fine engraved lines create grays, folds, sparkle, and movement.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central oval and then move outward, as if opening a greeting card. Compare the elegant horses at upper left with the goat-drawn sled at upper right: the contrast between wealth and modest ingenuity changes the festive tone. Finish at the bottom, where the children's movement seems to spill out of the holly frame.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, an 1859 wood engraving by Winslow Homer (American, 1836–1910), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art and purchased with the J. H. Wade Fund. The top of the sheet reads “HARPER'S WEEKLY,” which indicates that it was made for an illustrated periodical. Wood engravings allowed detailed images to be printed alongside text in large editions. The composition brings together the religious origin of Christmas, city scenes, and a children's celebration. Details such as the identity of each figure or the exact place of every vignette are not given in the source and are not known for certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the upper-right vignette, the winter sled is not pulled by horses or reindeer, but by a goat, while a small dog runs alongside— a modest, humorous counterpoint to the formal carriage at upper left.

I look at this cream colored sheet with broken and worn edges, as the record describes. It is a black and white print from 1859 made for Harper’s Weekly by Winslow Homer, using wood engraving. I focus on the holly and berry border that holds everything together, and how the fine lines create grays and light. The aged paper shows handwritten notes and a small stamp at the bottom right. It is fascinating how the white of the paper becomes light in the central Nativity scene.

I am drawn to how this image organizes time like a sky. In the center, the glowing oval of the woman with the child looks like a moon lighting the kneeling visitors. Above, on the left the carriages on the avenue and on the right the goat drawn sled on the snow mark winter. Below, the large children’s ballroom spins like a constellation of girls and boys around the Christmas tree. The holly border is the orbit that holds all these stations of the celebration.

So many things are happening here! At the top it says in big pretty letters A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and everything is surrounded by little holly leaves. In the middle there is a lady with a baby who shines brightly. At the top left some horse carriages go through the city and at the top right a goat pulls a sled with kids on the snow with a little dog behind. Below all the children dance in a hall with a Christmas tree and a lady with a huge skirt seems to lead them. I love finding details.

Me gusta buscar detalles.
