A horizontal black-and-white wood engraving depicting a rocky beach by the sea. In the immediate foreground, stones of varied sizes and textures — some smooth and rounded, others jagged — cover the sand; among them lie two fish on the rocks and charred wood remnants at the lower left corner. At center and right, a group of boys wearing straw hats, loose shirts and rolled-up trousers tend a clam bake. A thick column of dark smoke rises from a makeshift stone fire pit where several boys crouch closely together handling food. Another boy lounges leaning over a large boulder, gazing toward the fire in a relaxed pose. To the left, two barefoot boys jointly hold a metal pail, their feet touching the damp stones. Further back, a standing boy holds something under his arm and another crouches by the waterline searching among pebbles. The background shows a calm sea dotted with small sailboats on the horizon under a cloudy sky rendered with fine horizontal hatching suggesting wind and overcast light. The illumination is diffuse, and the engraving technique provides crisp, detailed linework with strong contrast between the black smoke, pale rocks and figures. The publication title appears centered below the image and the artist's signature is visible at the lower right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark smoke column on the right, which anchors the composition and draws attention to the crouching group. Then move left to the two boys sharing the pail and notice their bare feet on the wet stones. Finally look to the tiny sailboats on the horizon and the two fish left in the foreground, which shift the reading between play and labor.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the fine line of this 1873 wood engraving and how contrast holds the scene together. The dark smoke is a dense block of ink rising among pale stones, while the cloudy sky is suggested with controlled horizontal lines. I notice the textures: rounded and angular rocks, charred wood, loose clothing and bare feet. As a conservator, I think about the print on paper and the sharpness that still preserves the improvised stone hearth, the metal bucket and the small sailboats in the distance.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

It is not a starry night, but this cloudy sky made of horizontal strokes also tells me about weather and light. The soft, diffused light points to an overcast day, perfect for spending hours on the beach without harsh sun. In the background, the calm sea with many small sailboats marks the horizon as a line dividing water and air. I like to imagine a gentle breeze pushing those sailboats while the smoke from the stone hearth rises straight, a sign of little wind near the rocky shore.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love that there are only kids on the beach! Some crouch together around the fire taking care of the clams, another one lies on a giant rock watching the smoke, and two carry a metal bucket barefoot over the stones. I would also search among the rocks like the kid crouching by the shore. There are fish on the rocks and lots of tiny sailboats on the sea. It looks like an adventure where they cook and play all together without grown-ups.
