What you would seeLo que verías

This is a black-and-white engraving on yellowed, bone-colored paper, in a vertical format with a thin margin. In the right foreground, a young woman kneels on a wooden floor, her body in profile and her head bowed. She wears a long, light-colored dress that spreads like a fan across the floorboards, its folds drawn with fine lines; over her shoulders is a dark, striped shawl, and her upswept hair has a long ribbon falling down her back. She covers her face with both hands in a gesture of weeping or despair. Standing before her, and much taller, is a bearded man with wavy hair who looks down at her. He wears a three-piece suit with vertical striping, a buttoned waistcoat with a watch chain, a white shirt, and a dark tie; one hand hangs at his side and the other just brushes the woman's hair. His posture is stiff and restrained. Behind them is a bed or daybed with blankets, a hanging tassel, and a curved headboard; at right in the background, a table is covered with books and papers, and small pictures hang on the wallpapered walls, one tilted high up. Light, suggested by parallel and cross-hatched lines, falls across the dress and leaves the lower right corner in shadow.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the height difference: he standing, she kneeling on the floor. Then look at the hands — hers covering her face, his barely touching her hair — because that restrained contact changes a scene of pleading into one of moral conflict.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a wood engraving from 1868 by American artist Winslow Homer (1836–1910), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art and purchased with the J. H. Wade Fund. The inscriptions below the image, “Drawn by Winslow Homer” and the quotation followed by “—Page 354,” indicate that it was made as an illustration for a paginated publication, probably a serialized story. The source data do not identify the text it accompanied. The scene therefore must be read from its title and staging: a desperate refusal presented, in the language of the period, as a matter of sin.

Curious detailDato curioso

Winslow Homer began his career making drawings for wood engravings for illustrated magazines, before becoming one of the best-known painters in the United States; in prints like this one, his drawing had to be cut into the block by engravers.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What might the woman be refusing, and why does she express it as a sin?¿Qué puede estar rechazando la mujer y por qué lo expresa como un pecado?
  2. Does the standing man seem to be threatening, pleading, or trying to comfort her?
  3. How would the scene change if both figures were standing, face to face?¿Cómo cambiaría la escena si ambos estuvieran de pie, frente a frente?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the yellowish bone-colored paper with its thin margin and on how black ink builds everything with parallel and crosshatched lines. Look at the long dress of the kneeling woman: each fold is rendered with fine lines fanning out across the wooden floorboards. The dark striped shawl, the ribbon falling down her back, the watch chain of the standing man. As a conservator I wonder about that contrast between light and shadow, and how the wood engraving had to reproduce sharply on a numbered page like page 354.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this scene is a play of gravity and light. She kneels on the floor, he stands rigid and much taller, like two bodies with different weights. Light seems to come from a fixed point and bathes the pale dress while leaving the lower right corner and the table with books in the background in shadow. I see the bed with its curved headboard, the small pictures on the wallpapered wall, one tilted. Everything is contained in a nineteenth-century domestic interior, but the tension between them feels like an orbit about to break.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The lady is on the floor with her big dress that looks like a sad princess skirt, and she covers her face with both hands because she is crying a lot. The man stands next to her in his striped suit with his beard, and he almost touches her hair but he does not. Behind them there is a bed with blankets and a little tassel hanging, and a table full of books. I feel sorry for the lady and I want to know why she says it would be a terrible sin, she looks very scared.
