What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal print in ink and color on paper, with slightly irregular edges. The entire scene is crossed by dozens of thin, straight white lines running diagonally from upper left to lower right, representing intense, slanting rain. In the foreground at the bottom, a band of blue water touches the lower right corner and borders a dark bank with tall grass drawn in short strokes. A pale, curving path runs through the middle from left to right. On it, in the lower left, walk two small travelers seen from behind and bent against the wind: one carries a light, almost circular paper umbrella, and the other wears a hat or cloak in an ochre tone; their clothes show touches of blue and pink. At the center, a small torii gate rises among trees and white posts, beside flooded fields of vivid blue. On the left, a dense mass of nearly black trees partly hides a roofed building. On the right, solitary trees with rounded canopies dot the riverbank. In the background, a broad expanse of grayish water merges with low, dark hills under a gray sky, blackened along the top edge. In the upper right are columns of black Japanese calligraphy, and at lower right, a signature and seals. The texture is flat, with soft gradations and precise lines.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the white lines of rain across the whole sheet, then look for the two small travelers in the lower left. From them, move toward the torii gate at the center: that tiny accent shifts the scene from a simple landscape to a journey in bad weather near a sacred place.

ContextContexto

This color woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), made in the mid-1830s, belongs to the series Eight Views of the Environs of Edo, present-day Tokyo. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Hiroshige reinterprets the traditional Chinese theme of the Eight Views of Xiaoxiang, moving the motif of night rain to the area around Azuma Jinja Shrine, in a suburb of Edo. The work belongs to the Edo period (1615–1868). The exact location as it appears here and the identity of the travelers are not known; they are probably ordinary passersby, not specific historical figures.

Curious detailDato curioso

The vivid blue in the water was made with a synthetic pigment imported from the West, known as Prussian blue, which became wildly popular in Japan in the early 1800s and transformed the palette of woodblock prints.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the rain drawn with dozens of thin white diagonal lines crossing the entire print, a very precise technical gesture to suggest slanting downpour on paper. I notice the flat ink and soft gradients of vivid blue in the flooded fields and the darkened gray sky, with slightly irregular edges typical of woodblock printing. The two small travelers seen from behind, with their light umbrella and ochre cape, show touches of blue and pink that still feel fresh and well preserved.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this gray sky darkened at the top and think of a starless night, covered by heavy rain falling diagonally across the whole scene. I am drawn to how Hiroshige lets water dominate everything: the blue strip in the foreground, the flooded fields in the center and the grayish background blending into low hills. It is a damp nocturnal landscape where the horizon is barely visible. The two travelers with an umbrella move under that closed canopy, tiny against the vastness of water and night.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is raining a lot and everything is covered with little slanted white lines! At the bottom there are two tiny people walking away from us along a light curved path. One carries a round umbrella like a mushroom and the other wears an ochre hat, and they look cold and in a hurry. I like the bright blue water that looks like giant puddles and the little white gate among the trees. On the left there is a super dark forest hiding a house. Everything looks wet and mysterious.
