A black-and-white wood engraving on aged ivory paper, arranged as nine small vignettes with irregular, sketchy borders surrounding a larger central oval. The center shows a uniformed policeman seen from behind dragging two women in long dresses and bonnets along a cobbled street lined with brick storefronts, a lamppost and onlookers in the background. The title BOSTON STREET CHARACTERS arches above this scene. Clockwise from top left: a grinder with his wheeled sharpening apparatus and a small girl; a seated street vendor with a box and two children; a fashionable strolling couple, the man with a cane; a lamplighter climbing a ladder to light a tall street lamp; a man struggling to hold a rearing horse hitched to a carriage; at bottom center, a man in a top hat running into the wind with his coat flying; at bottom left, a gentleman in frock coat and top hat watched by two women and a small dog; on the left, street groups including three men chatting and two men accosting another. Dense cross-hatching and fine parallel lines model clothing folds, fur, foliage and stonework, creating strong contrast between black ink and pale paper. Tiny details reward close looking: handbills reading BALLOU'S DOLLAR MONTHLY and TREMONT HALL, the glass panes of the lantern, wrinkles in heavy coats, the strain in the horse's neck.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large central oval of the policeman and the two women to grasp the urban, moralizing anchor of the composition. Then move around the outer ring vignette by vignette, comparing posture and dress. Notice the small props and signs — the lantern, the horse, the grinder's wheel — that turn each vignette into a tiny narrative.

ContextContexto

This is an 1859 wood engraving by American artist Winslow Homer (1836–1910), held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Homer began his career as an illustrator in Boston and New York, providing images for popular illustrated weeklies such as Ballou's Pictorial. Such composite prints cataloguing urban types were a common form of visual journalism and entertainment, blending observation with humor. The sheet gathers stereotyped Boston street figures of the late 1850s around a central police scene. No further source description is provided, so specific identities or anecdotes behind each vignette are not documented and probably reflect generic, observational impressions rather than commissioned portraits.

Curious detailDato curioso

The print embeds real period advertising inside the image: one figure wears a sandwich board advertising BALLOU'S DOLLAR MONTHLY, the illustrated magazine that actually published the young Homer's early work.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the support and the ink. It is a wood engraving in black on ivory paper now aged to warm light tones. I notice the high contrast and the fine cross hatching that builds clothing, stone, fur and foliage. I look at the irregular borders of the nine vignettes surrounding the larger central oval. I think about its age, from 1859, and how the printing still keeps small posters and delicate textures legible without losing sharpness.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I look at the lights and shadows of the street. I am drawn to the lamplighter on the ladder lighting a street lamp and the detailed lamp in the central scene, because they show how Boston was lit before electric light. I notice the contrast between black ink and light paper that creates night and day with lines alone. I picture the cobbled street at dusk, with brick buildings and onlookers in the background watching under that single point of light.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love that it is like many stories on one sheet! In the middle a policeman takes two ladies away and everyone watches. Around there is a man with a horse rearing up, another running because it is very windy and his coat flies, and a man lighting a lamp way up high. There is also a sharpener with his wheel, kids, a little dog and carriages. Everything is in black and white like an old comic and I want to explore every little frame.
