What you would seeLo que verías

An old bound book lies open, seen from above against a plain light-gray background. Most of the view is taken up by a yellowed ivory vellum leaf, its left edge showing the thickness of many stacked pages and a worn dark-brown binding. At the center is a vertical rectangular miniature framed in gold, blue, and a thin pink band. Against a muted reddish ground patterned with delicate gold scrollwork, the Virgin stands full-length on a strip of green. She wears a long, deep-blue mantle falling in heavy folds over a red dress visible at her chest and hem. Her pale face bends tenderly toward the naked Child in her arms; both have large patterned gold halos. The Child, also pale-skinned with a small halo, turns toward his mother and raises one small hand near her shoulder. Around the miniature spreads an exuberant border of curling ivy leaves, many of them gilt, with blue, red, and pink flowers. At top center a small floral motif emerges, and at bottom center sits a small golden vase. Looking closely, one notices stains, darkened smudges near the left margin, faint wear to the paint, and a small brown spot on the blank lower part of the page.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the deep blue mantle and the way it frames the smaller red dress and the Child's pale body. Then move outward to the ivy border and notice how the gold leaves seem to grow around the sacred scene. Finally, look at the worn edges of the page: the devotion was not only in the image, but also in the handling of the book.

ContextContexto

This page, folio 26v, comes from a Book of Hours for the Use of Metz, made in Metz, France, around 1440 by an unknown artist in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is the volume's only full-page miniature and it introduces the prayer beginning 'Holy Mary, faultless Lady, intercede for us...' The first seven folios list dedications of churches in Metz and indulgences specific to that diocese. In the 1400s Metz, on the Moselle River, was a cultural and commercial center of Lorraine and an important bishopric, with a growing book trade. The patron is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite its rich border and gold, this Book of Hours contains only one full-page miniature, this Virgin and Child, which gives the image an exceptional weight within the volume.

If you look closely you will see what time has left on this yellowish ivory vellum. It is the only full page miniature in the book and that made it more vulnerable to handling. Notice the light paint wear, the stains and the darkened area near the left margin where the page was touched most. Tempera and gold were applied with patience: the deep blue mantle with heavy folds, the red dress peeking at the chest, the gold halos with patterns and the curly ivy border with flowers. Below, at the center, that little golden vase still shines despite a small brown spot nearby.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I love the muted reddish background with fine gold scrolls, like a constellation drawn by hand. In the center, on a green strip that looks like a small planet, there are two figures with large golden halos working like suns. The contrast is beautiful: the Virgin's intense blue mantle against the red of her dress, and the fair skinned naked Child turning toward her. All around expands an exuberant border of curling ivy leaves, many golden, with blue, red and pink flowers. It is a portable medieval sky, made in Metz around 1440.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The lady in the blue cloak is hugging her baby and they look at each other with so much tenderness. The baby has no clothes and lifts a little hand to his mom's shoulder, as if he wants a bigger hug. Both have a shiny gold circle around their head, like crowns of light. I like the edge full of curly ivy leaves, some golden, and little blue, red and pink flowers that look like vines. At the bottom there is a tiny golden little vase. The book looks chubby, with many pages and a worn brown edge.
