The image shows an open page, folio 324 recto, against a plain dark gray background. A sheet of aged, cream-colored vellum fills almost the entire frame, its edges irregular, its corners rounded, with faint stains, darker areas from handling, and a slight waviness across the surface. At the far left, the gutter and the edge of the preceding page are partly visible. Across the upper portion stretches a rectangular illuminated headpiece. At its center, dark Greek capital letters on a pale ground give the title of the Gospel according to John. Around it runs a repeated pattern of stylized plants and flowers in deep blue, green, pink, and gold. Above the rectangle, two pinkish-purple birds with slender legs bend their beaks symmetrically toward a small ornamental fountain or cup at the center. Pointed finials project from the corners, and blue flowers on gilded stems rise at either side. In the left margin, a narrow vertical miniature shows a seated evangelist in profile, writing at a lectern within a curved, decorated frame. Below the headpiece, dense lines of handwritten Greek in brown ink fill the page, with some larger initials, notes, and passages in reddish ink. Much of the lower half remains empty, drawing light and attention toward the colorful opening above.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two birds leaning over the small fountain at the top; their symmetry turns the title into a kind of sacred doorway. Then move to the tiny seated figure in the left margin and notice that writing itself is being portrayed. Finally, follow the shift from the bright, crowded headpiece to the dense script and the large empty lower half of the page.

ContextContexto

This page, dated to about 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople, comes from a Gospel Book with Commentaries written in Greek. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves and was made with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding; its author is unknown. Each Gospel opens with an illuminated page showing its author, birds—mainly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains, representing the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul. Its sophistication suggests it was probably made in a Constantinopolitan monastery, although this is not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

The two birds at the top are not merely decorative: they lean toward a central fountain, visually linking the opening of the text with the idea of life and salvation before the reading even begins.

  1. What does the image of the birds at the fountain add to a text that is about to speak of the Word and of life?¿Qué aporta la imagen de las aves junto a la fuente a un texto que está a punto de hablar del Verbo y de la vida?
  2. Why portray the evangelist as so small in the margin while the title and ornament receive so much color and gold?¿Por qué representar al evangelista tan pequeño en el margen mientras el título y la ornamentación reciben tanto color y oro?
  3. How does the large empty space in the lower half change your experience of reading, or of contemplating, this page?¿Cómo cambia el gran espacio vacío de la mitad inferior tu experiencia de leer, o de contemplar, esta página?

I pause on the cream-colored vellum with its uneven edges, faint stains and gentle ripples that speak of a thousand years of use. The upper headpiece fascinates me with its tempera and gold still vibrant, with intense blues, greens and pinks framing the title in Greek. I notice the two pinkish birds facing the ornamental fountain and the small miniature of the evangelist in the margin. Below, the text in brown and reddish ink leaves a luminous empty space that lets the page breathe and preserves its delicate balance.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page as a small ordered sky. The headpiece is a constellation of blue flowers, golden circles and two symmetrical birds orbiting a central fountain as if it were a sun. The title in Greek is the equator separating the illuminated firmament from the dark sea of text. I like that the lower half stays empty, like a night space that lets the header shine. The evangelist in the margin looks like a solitary observer recording light, just as we do when we gaze at the ancient universe.

This leaf looks like it came from a giant magic book! At the top there is a bright border with blue, green and gold, and two little pink birds looking at each other across a pretty little cup. I like that the title is written in funny Greek letters, like a secret code. On the side there is a tiny man sitting and writing inside his curved little house. Below there are many lines of brown and red letters, but they leave a lot of empty space so the top part can shine more.
