What you would seeLo que verías

A studio photograph shows a vertical rectangular object standing in the center against a plain gray background that fades from dark at the top to almost white at the bottom. The piece is matte black, with slightly worn edges and rounded upper corners. Its surface has a fine, grainy texture, with soft highlights along the raised areas and a short, faint shadow beneath its base, suggesting it is a small object meant to be held in the hand, although no human reference is shown for scale. The upper half is densely carved in relief. At the left and center are three vertical columns of Chinese characters with thick, irregular strokes. At the upper right, a gnarled pine leans diagonally; beneath its branches sits a bearded figure wrapped in flowing robes, surrounded by spiraling clouds. In the middle is a small, smooth, horizontal oval hollow. Below it opens a broad, plain, slightly concave square area with rounded corners, almost empty. Swirling waves or clouds curl along its left and lower edges, balancing the busy carving above with the calm, dark surface below.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the smooth, nearly empty lower half, then move upward to the dense carving. Notice how the small horizontal hollow separates the two areas and marks the object's practical function. The bearded figure among the clouds changes how the piece reads: it is not only a tool, but also a small landscape to contemplate.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this piece is titled Ink Cake, was made by an unknown maker in China during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), and was a gift from Henry W. Kent. Ink cakes are solid blocks made to be rubbed with water on an inkstone, producing liquid ink for calligraphy and painting. During this period they were often pressed in molds with inscriptions and relief images, so they could be both useful and collectible. The exact year, the maker's name, and a reliable translation of the inscription visible here are not provided in the source, so they are not known from these records.

Curious detailDato curioso

Solid ink does not spill and keeps for a long time: the writer decided how thick or thin it would be by controlling the amount of water and the time spent grinding it.

  1. What does it mean for such a carefully carved object to be gradually worn away through use?¿Qué significa que un objeto tallado con tanto cuidado esté destinado a gastarse poco a poco con el uso?
  2. How do the inscription, the pine, and the figure turn a writing tool into an image worth contemplating?¿Cómo logran la inscripción, el pino y la figura convertir una herramienta de escritura en una imagen para contemplar?
  3. What would change in our reading of the piece if we could read every character in the inscription?¿Qué cambiaría en nuestra interpretación si pudiéramos leer todos los caracteres de la inscripción?

I see a rectangular block in matte black, with slightly rounded upper corners and gently worn edges. The upper area is densely carved: three vertical columns of Chinese characters, a leaning pine, and a bearded figure among swirling clouds that seem to move. I am struck by the contrast between that crowded relief and the lower section below, broad, almost square and slightly concave, meant to be rubbed with water. That small oval hollow in the middle makes me think about how decoration and function balance out.

What draws me is how this black cake looks like a carved night sky. Up top there is a twisted pine and a figure among spiral clouds, as if floating, and beside them three columns of characters that also read like constellations of brushstrokes. Below, everything turns serene: a smooth, slightly concave surface waiting for water, like a calm horizon. That oval hollow at the center feels like a dark moon. It is a small object to hold in your hand, yet it suggests a vast landscape contained inside.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a dark chocolate bar but you cannot eat it. The top is packed with drawings: a crooked little tree, a bearded man among clouds shaped like tiny snails, and some funny lines that are Chinese letters. In the middle there is a little oval hole like a tiny pool and below there is a smooth, sunken square where ink would be made with water. I like that one side has so many things and the other has nothing, as if the top were a windy sky and the bottom a calm mirror.
