Molded ink in blue

What you would seeLo que verías

A single elongated object stands vertically in the center of the image against a smooth gray background that darkens toward the top and lightens below. It is a deep turquoise-blue ink cake, roughly rectangular, taller than it is wide, with straight sides, a flat base, and a pointed, roof-like upper end formed by two short sloping edges. Its surface is matte, slightly mottled and veined, with subtle variations between darker teal and paler blue-green, plus a few faint whitish marks and fine cracks, especially near the edges. A shallow vertical ridge runs down the middle, dividing the face into two nearly symmetrical halves. On each half, a dragon rises in low relief, its long scaly body curving in an S shape. The heads are at the top, with horns, open jaws, whiskers, and detailed manes; clawed legs project from the bodies and the tails taper to flame-like points at the bottom. Hundreds of small overlapping scales cover the bodies. Above the dragons, near the point, is an ornate cloud or ruyi-shaped motif with spirals; a larger layered cloud motif closes the composition at the base. The lighting is soft and even, emphasizing the relief without harsh shadows. No box, inscription, people, or scale reference is visible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the vertical silhouette and its pointed top, then move closer to the two dragons. Notice how the central ridge separates them and how the cloud motifs at both ends frame the scene. Finally, look for the fine scales and small irregularities in the blue surface: they reveal that this is a molded, delicate object, not a flat plaque.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this blue ink cake was made in China between 1795 and 1820, during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), by an unknown maker. It is molded ink and forms part of a set presented as a box of ink cakes. Ink cakes, or ink sticks, were moistened with water and ground on a flat stone to produce liquid ink for painting and calligraphy. The source notes that these precious examples were never used, and that an inscription on the side of the blue cake states the set was commissioned by Chen Huai, governor of Jiangxi Province. It is not known from the available information who used the set after it was commissioned.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although it was made to produce ink, this cake was never ground down: it survives intact as a prestige and collectible object, not as a worn writing tool.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on its matte, mottled surface with veins ranging from dark bluish green to pale turquoise and fine cracks near the edges. It is molded ink made between 1795 and 1820 not to be used but to be kept as a prestige object. I look at the central ridge dividing the face in two and the two dragons in low relief with hundreds of overlapping scales. The soft light reveals its fragility and the extreme care its preservation demands.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

From my sky this blue ink cake looks like a small vertical monolith pointing upward, like a gui scepter crowned with a gabled point. Its intense turquoise blue recalls the deep vault of dusk. The two S-shaped dragons look like symmetrical constellations winding upward toward the cloud motif at the top. That perfect symmetry makes me think of the balance of the cosmos, where every element has its ordered reflection in space.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant blue candy popsicle with a little house roof on top. I love its turquoise color with speckles and that it has two dragons with lots of tiny scales like twins playing copycat. One on the left and one on the right, with whiskers, little horns and flame tails. The dragon looks angry with its mouth open but funny. At the bottom and top there are curly little clouds that look like cake decorations. I would not use it for painting, I would keep it as a treasure.

It is a cool bright tone between blue and green that dominates the whole piece.

  3. #3

What shape is the top end of the cake, similar to the roof of a little house?

    HintPista

Look at the very top: it is not flat, it ends in a point with two sloping sides.
