Molded ink in black

What you would seeLo que verías

Against a smooth background that shifts from dark gray at the top to pale gray below, a single black object is shown frontally, centered and isolated, with no other elements for scale. It is a molded ink cake with a nearly square shape whose corners are stepped in and out, forming an irregular, almost octagonal outline with a raised rim. Its whole surface is covered by a landscape in low relief, rendered only in blacks and dark grays. In the lower right, diagonal wavy lines suggest water or a sloping bank. Just above them sits a small house with a curved tiled roof and a tiny round opening. On the left and through the center, several larger buildings rise among trees; their layered, slightly upturned roofs are marked with fine parallel lines for tiles, and long roof ridges descend diagonally across the scene. Twisted trunks and dense, dotted or fan-shaped foliage fill the spaces between the buildings and crowd the upper register, creating a thick wooded backdrop. The light is even and soft, revealing the matte, slightly grainy texture of the ink and the precision of details that emerge only on close looking: roof tiles, leaves, branches, and water lines.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the irregular, almost octagonal silhouette, then let your eye climb from the waves in the lower right toward the roofs among the trees. Notice how depth is created without color, only through overlapping planes and finer or bolder carving. The detail that changes the reading is its material: this landscape is not meant only to be looked at, but to be ground down and turned into ink.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this piece dates to 1780–94, during the Qianlong reign (1736–95) of China's Qing dynasty (1644–1911), and its maker is unknown. It is one of ten molded ink cakes, in different shapes and colors, kept in a lacquered box commissioned by the emperor. Each bore, in gold, a poem by Qianlong praising one of the ten famous views of West Lake in Hangzhou. Ink cakes were moistened and rubbed on an inkstone to produce liquid ink for calligraphy and painting. These precious examples, the museum notes, were never used.

Curious detailDato curioso

A landscape carved into ink could literally become another landscape: rubbed with water on an inkstone, the cake would dissolve into the liquid used to paint or write.

Look closely at this black ink cake from the Qianlong period, between 1780 and 1794. What you see is not painting, it is molded low relief in solid ink, with that raised border and stepped cut corners. I love how the matte, slightly grainy black lets you read, under even light, every parallel roof tile, every twisted trunk and every diagonal wave by the water. It was part of an imperial set of ten different pieces, kept in a lacquered box with poems in gold. This one was never rubbed on stone, so its landscape remains intact.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this black surface is like a miniature night sky, but made of Qing ink. In that almost octagonal rectangle, isolated against a gray background that lightens toward the bottom, I can pick out constellations of details: roofs with upturned eaves running diagonally, a little house with a curved roof and round opening by waves suggesting water, and above a dense forest of dotted and fan shaped foliage. Everything was molded for an imperial commission by the Qianlong emperor, dedicated to the ten famous views of West Lake in Hangzhou, and it was never turned into liquid ink.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a black square cookie with cut corners! But if you get really close, you see a tiny village hidden among trees. At the bottom right there is little water with lines, and just above a house with a curved roof and a round window. Toward the center there are bigger houses with roofs full of little lines, like tiny stairs, and all around there are trees with dotted and fan shaped leaves. It is from a very long time ago, when an emperor of China wanted to remember a beautiful lake, and nobody ever used it for painting, so you can still see every detail clearly.
