Molded ink in red
What you would seeLo que verías
The image presents a single vertical ink stick in a deep, matte cinnabar red, photographed frontally against a smooth gradient gray background. The object is rectangular with an irregular, notched silhouette, slightly wider at the bottom, framed by a raised border with two small stepped indentations at mid-height on either side. The entire face is filled with a finely molded low relief landscape rendered with precise, shallow carving. At the top, layered mountains with fine parallel hatching suggest ridges and foliage beneath a lightly lined sky. Below, a row of bare trees with intricate, twisting branches stretches across the middle ground. The central focus is a complex of traditional Chinese pavilions with curved tiled roofs, overhanging eaves, balustrades and wooden pillars, set on rocky outcrops. In the lower foreground, a weeping willow with dense, thread-like hanging branches leans over rippled water on the left, while on the right an arched bridge topped by a small gazebo spans the stream. Even, studio lighting emphasizes every incised line and casts soft shadows inside the relief, highlighting the matte, compact texture of the molded ink. A faint vertical crack runs through the upper third. The scale appears intimate, a handheld luxury object meant for close contemplation rather than daily use.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the raised frame and follow the landscape from the distant mountains down to the water, reading it as a miniature scroll. Notice how the crisp, architectural lines of the pavilions contrast with the flowing, delicate strands of the willow and the waves; that tension shows the carver's skill.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is one of ten ink cakes of different shapes and colors housed in a lacquer box, from China, Qing dynasty, Qianlong reign, dated 1780 to 1794. Each cake is inscribed in gold with a poem by the Qianlong emperor praising one of the Ten Famous Sights of West Lake in Hangzhou, near Shanghai. Made of molded red ink with a scenic relief, ink cakes are normally ground with water on an inkstone to make liquid ink for calligraphy and painting, yet this imperial set has never been used. The individual maker is not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although they look like sculptures, these are functional solid ink: rubbing them with water on an inkstone creates usable ink, yet this West Lake imperial set was preserved unused as a collectible work of art.

The conservatorLa restauradora
This bar was not made to be used, but to be preserved. It is molded cinnabar red ink, not carved, with a relief so fine it reveals mountains, trees and pavilions. I notice the vertical crack in the upper third and the raised frame that protects the scene. As a conservator I worry about dust in the grooves and light exposure, because the #B0302A color can change. It is one of ten pieces from an imperial set kept in a lacquer box, never ground on stone.

I look at this bar as if it were a miniature sky map. The intense red reminds me of Mars and cinnabar, and the relief looks like topography seen from above. The wavy mountains with parallel lines, the rippled water and the arched bridge create layers like orbits. It is a vertical piece with side notches, like a banner. Of the ten that made up the Qianlong commission between 1780 and 1794, this one holds the West Lake landscape with a poem in gold on the back.

It looks like a red chocolate bar but you cannot eat it! It is bright red and has little pictures sticking out. On top there are mountains with little lines, then tiny trees with no leaves, little houses with curved Chinese roofs and a small bridge over water. On the left a weeping willow hangs like with little hairs. It has two small notches on the sides like ears. It is small, to hold in your hand, and barely shiny. They say there are ten and they were never used for painting because they belonged to an emperor.
