Molded ink in green

What you would seeLo que verías

A single vertical object fills almost the whole image, photographed straight on against a grey background that lightens towards the bottom. It is a moulded ink cake, roughly rectangular, with softly curved, cut-away corners and a raised rim framing the scene. The whole piece is a deep blue-green, matte and even in colour; only raking light and the shadows cast by the relief make the carving legible. The surface works as a landscape in layers. At the top, a mountain range is drawn with tight, wavy lines. Below it stand tall pines with flat canopies and, among them, several pavilions with curved roofs whose tiles are marked by fine grooves. In the centre and foreground, the thin, arching branches of willows hang down. To left and right are two small arched bridges over horizontal bands suggesting causeways or banks; beneath the central willow is a tiny open structure by the water. At the bottom, water is rendered with sinuous horizontal lines between two masses of land. Tiny dots and shoots speckle the shores. There are no people, animals or visible characters on this face; the scale feels intimate, like something made to be held in the hand and examined up close.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the landscape from the mountains at the top down to the water at the bottom, as if you were travelling through it. Then look for the two small arched bridges: they link the shores and give depth to such a tiny surface. Finally, remember that this is ink: the image could disappear if the cake were ever ground down and used.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this piece, by an unknown maker and dated 1780–94, comes from Qing-dynasty China during the Qianlong reign (1736–95). It belonged to an imperially commissioned set: ten ink cakes of different shapes and colours, kept in a lacquer box, each inscribed in gold with a poem by the Qianlong emperor praising one of the ten famous sights of West Lake in Hangzhou. Ink cakes are moistened and rubbed on a stone to make liquid ink for calligraphy and painting, but the precious cakes in this set were never used. Which exact view this face represents, and where the poem is on this example, is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although it was made to become liquid ink, this cake was never ground or used: it has survived for more than two centuries as an image, not as a writing tool.

If you look closely you will see this is not a painting but relief carved into solid ink. That deep blue green color is unusual and makes me think about pigments and fragility. Its raised border protected it and its matte surface shows how raking light reveals every roof, every pine and every ripple of water. There were ten cakes in a lacquer box and this one was never rubbed on a stone. Preserving it means preventing wear, humidity and loss of such fine relief.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I like to imagine this scene as an inverted sky. The wavy mountains at the top are like a distant horizon and the water below, with its horizontal lines, seems to reflect everything. The little bridges are passages between constellations and the pavilions are tiny observatories among pines. There are no people or letters here, just landscape for contemplation. It is a piece made for the hand, intimate, like a portable map of a famous place that invited calm looking.

It looks like a giant tablet in blue green that fits in your hand. If you touch it with your eyes you can follow the paths of the tiny bridges and count the pavilions with curved roofs hiding among pines. On top there are mountains with little lines and below water with soft waves. There are no people, so you can invent who lives there. I like how the willows hang like curtains over the water.
