According to the source, this is an ink cake by an unknown maker, produced in China between 1736 and 1795, during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and the Qianlong reign (1736-95). It is now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, in its Chinese Art department, as a gift of Henry W. Kent. In the Chinese tradition, these solid pieces were made by molding a paste of soot and binder. It looks like a giant dark chocolate bar that you cannot eat. It is all black and full of little lines as if it were very old and cracked. It has raised little drawings: a house with curvy roofs on top, many tiny trees and houses going down a staircase, and waves made of many lines.
