What you would seeLo que verías
A rectangular engraving on pale, aged paper, irregular and fibrous along the right edge, frames an interior scene bordered by dense hand-lettered text on all four sides. At the center sits Christ, large in scale, in a long, heavy robe whose folds fall in sharp, shaded planes to his feet. His head, encircled by a halo, tilts to one side with eyes lowered and mouth still, while a crown of thorns is forced onto it with two long crossed sticks. Four tormentors surround him closely. On the left, a short-tunic figure in profile grips a stick and raises one hand; behind him, another man lifts both arms energetically. On the right, a tall figure in a rounded hat leans his whole body into the pressure, legs braced. At the lower right, a fifth figure kneels or reclines near Christ's feet, looking up in mockery. The room is suggested by a beamed ceiling, a window at upper left, and a diamond-lattice wall behind. The image is mostly gray-black line and cross-hatching on cream paper, with faint reddish hand coloring on hats, hands, a foot, and edges of garments.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at Christ's bowed face at the center, then follow the two crossed sticks pressing down on his head. From there, move outward to the faces and gestures around him: noticing the contrast between his stillness and their exertion changes the scene from a biblical episode into a study of mockery.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this print, *The Passion: Christ Crowning with Thorns*, c. 1450–75, is an engraving with traces of hand coloring, attributed to the Master of the Banderoles (Netherlandish, active about 1450–75) and the Master ES (German, active 1450–67). It depicts an episode from Christ's Passion, when soldiers mock him before the Crucifixion. In the fifteenth-century Netherlands, prints such as this allowed devotional images to circulate beyond unique paintings. The exact division of work between the two named masters is not stated in the source; those names are scholarly designations, not known biographies.

Curious detailDato curioso
Neither the Master of the Banderoles nor the Master ES is known by a real name: art historians identified them from distinctive features of their work — the inscribed scrolls or banderoles in one case, and the initials E.S. in the other.

This creamy paper is already aged and its right edge is irregular and fibrous, a sign of its age. I focus on the cross-hatching in grays and blacks that models the angular folds of Christ’s heavy tunic falling to his feet. The reddish color applied by hand on hats, hands and garment edges is very faint and fragile, clearly not printed. The dense handwritten text band surrounding the engraving also matters to me, because it shows how devotional image and word were combined.

I look at this interior room as if it were an enclosed sky. The window at the upper left lets light in, but the true luminous focus is the halo around Christ’s tilted head. While the four tormentors press him with two crossed rods on the crown, everything seems to rotate around him. The diamond-lattice wall in the background reminds me of a geometric constellation. Amid that tension and mockery, the halo holds a stillness that contrasts with the violent motion of the others.

Jesus is sitting in the middle and looks much bigger than everyone else. He wears a long tunic that covers his feet and has a little shiny circle around his head. There are four men standing very close to him and another one down below almost lying down who looks at him meanly. They are putting the crown on him with two long crossed sticks and it does not look kind at all. Behind there is a little window, beams on the ceiling and a wall with little diamonds. Everything is gray and black except for small reddish touches.
