What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, rectangular textile hangs vertically against a plain gray background, photographed straight-on and filling most of the frame. Its surface is divided into registers: a broad central field, narrow side borders, and denser bands across the top and bottom. The central field is made of three vertical panels joined by visible seams. Across them runs a repeating lattice of diamonds in deep burgundy, cream, ivory, and muted gold, outlined with fine dark stitching. Some diamonds are solid, others contain smaller diamonds, stepped edges, tiny dots, or zigzag centers, so the pattern feels rhythmic but not mechanical. Thin vertical stripes in brown, gold, and dark thread separate the center from the side borders, which carry smaller diamonds and star-like motifs. Near both ends, a row of larger orange, gold, and cream diamonds gives way to a band of overlapping circles in burgundy, olive, rust, white, and green, each with a contrasting center. The cotton ground is mostly covered in the middle, while the silk embroidery has a soft sheen and slightly raised texture. Edges are a little uneven, folds and gentle undulations catch the light, and minute variations in stitch and alignment reveal handwork throughout.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the central diamonds from top to bottom and notice how the rhythm holds despite small variations. Then compare the three vertical panels: their motifs align, but do not repeat exactly. Finally, move to the circular bands at the ends, where the geometry changes and the eye rests.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this piece as a hanging in phulkari work, by an unknown maker, dated circa 1875–1900, from Punjab, India, in the late 19th century. It is embroidered silk on cotton and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Mrs. J. Livingstone Taylor. Phulkari is a Punjabi embroidery tradition historically practiced by women, often for textiles used in family and ceremonial life. Its name is commonly associated with floral work, although geometric patterns such as this one are also frequent. The specific use, place of manufacture, and biography of this hanging are not recorded in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although phulkari is commonly translated as “flower work,” this example contains almost no recognizable flowers: its visual force comes from diamonds, zigzags, and circles repeated with slight irregularities.

If you get close, you see the cotton almost disappears under the silk. The central field is made of three vertical panels stitched together, and those seams are still visible. I linger on the diamonds: some plain, others holding smaller diamonds inside, tiny dots or zigzags, all outlined with fine dark stitching. In orange, deep red, cream and muted gold, nothing is perfectly identical. The edges are slightly uneven and the stitches vary; that is where you read the hand behind it. At top and bottom, the band of overlapping circles in olive, rust and white finishes the soft sheen of the embroidery.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This hanging looks like an orderly sky to me. The deep maroon ground is like nighttime and the diamonds in cream and gold are constellations repeating across it. Each diamond holds another center inside, as if they were double stars or systems within systems. The thin vertical lines in brown and gold work like meridians separating the center from the side borders. And at the top and bottom, those overlapping circles in green, white and rust remind me of eclipses or aligned planets. Handmade between 1875 and 1900, its repetition is not mechanical, it is rhythmic, like orbits.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant blanket for a dollhouse. I see lots of diamonds, some with a tiny diamond inside and others with little dots, like windows with different curtains. I like to count the colors: deep red, cream, gold and orange, and also green in the circles at the top and bottom. Those circles overlap like coins. You can tell someone made it by hand because not all the diamonds are the same and the edges are a little wobbly. If you touch it with your eyes, it feels shiny from the silk and cozy from all the stitching.
