What you would seeLo que verías
A rectangular table photographed from the front, slightly from above, against a plain black background that isolates the piece and sharpens its silhouette. The broad, straight-edged top dominates the upper half; its walnut surface shows honey, amber, and brown tones, with grain and areas darkened over time. It is covered by very dense geometric inlay: at the center, a field of small repeated motifs in checkerboard and diamond patterns; around it, concentric bands, interlaced designs, and a border of separate panels, some with small greenish or grayish inlaid pieces. The edge is also decorated with fine, pale ornament. Below the top is a dark apron. At the corners hang carved ram heads with round drops beneath them. The support is symmetrical and sculptural: two smooth columns with carved capitals, flanked by winged creatures in profile, stand on a horizontal beam that ends in lion heads. In the center, another beam projects toward the viewer, creating a cross-shaped base. Above it rises a vertical support with a lion's head at the top and, below, a nude female figure with long forms, seen from the front. The wood of the base is darker and more matte than the top, with deep relief, shadows in the folds of wings, manes, and faces. The table looks heavy, stable, and made to be walked around.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the tabletop and let its small geometric pattern slow you down, as if you were reading a textile. Then look down: the base turns into a procession of columns, wings, and animal heads. Notice that the most elaborate carving is underneath, in the shadows, where it would only be discovered from close up.
ContextContexto
The source identifies this piece as Inlaid Table, made between 1550 and 1599 by an unknown author, within the 16th-century French Burgundian School. It is listed as walnut, in the category of furniture and woodwork, and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art through the Bequest of John L. Severance. No additional description is provided by the source. Probably, inlay combined with mythological and animal carving belonged to the elaborate visual language of fine European furniture of the period. Who commissioned, used, or carved it, and where exactly it was made, is not known from the available data.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: the ends of the cross-shaped base and the lower supports end in lion heads, so at least four feline faces watch from near the floor.

I start with the top: that walnut in honey, amber and coffee tones is covered in very dense geometric marquetry, with checker and diamond patterns at the center and concentric bands toward the edge. You can see the grain and areas darkened over time, plus small greenish and grayish inlays. Below, the base is darker and more matte, with deep carving in lions, rams and winged creatures. That contrast in sheen and relief tells me about combined techniques and woods.

I see this table as a small ordered cosmos. The top is like a gridded sky: checkers, diamonds and framed squares repeating with symmetry, like geometric constellations against the black background that isolates everything. The base, by contrast, feels earthly and symmetrical, with columns, lion and ram heads, and those winged creatures in profile guarding the center. It is designed to be walked around, to be observed from above and all sides, like a map.

This table looks like it is from a fairy tale but really heavy. On top it has lots of little designs in honey and brown that make diamonds and little squares, like a giant puzzle. Underneath there are animals everywhere: lions with their manes, little rams at the corners and two winged beings on the sides. In the middle there is a lady with no clothes carved in wood. I like counting the lion heads and seeing how the base makes a cross so it will not fall.
