What you would seeLo que verías

The piece occupies the center of the image, photographed from the front against a background that shifts from black at the top to light gray on the supporting surface. It is a lidded vessel made of polished jade in pale greens, mint, and translucent emerald, with whitish veining and almost milky areas. The body is broad and rounded, resting on a short, slightly flared circular foot. An openwork band encircles its middle with large flowers of open petals and interlacing leaves; below it is a relief band of repeated motifs resembling petals or flames. On both sides project dragon heads with open snouts, marked teeth, carved manes, and small horns; from each jaw, through a curve, hangs a smooth, loose ring that appears to be movable. The stepped, domed lid repeats an openwork floral band and an incised geometric band. It is crowned by two small crouching creatures facing each other, among interlaced forms and a sphere. Soft, directed light creates highlights on the smooth surfaces, reveals translucency at the thin edges, and casts a dark, defined shadow to the right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the loose rings hanging from the dragons' jaws and imagine the faint sound they might make if the piece were moved. Then look at the openwork bands, where solid stone becomes almost like lace. Finally, go up to the two small creatures on the lid: their confrontation turns a functional container into a small sculptural scene.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this work is titled Koro, is by an unknown maker, and dates to 1736–95, during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), in the Qianlong reign, in China. It is carved in jade and belongs to the Chinese Art holdings of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which preserves it through the Bequest of John L. Severance. The term koro is associated with lidded incense burners, although the source does not specify this object's particular use or earlier provenance. In Qing-period China, polished jade carved with openwork and with floral and animal motifs was highly prized for its hardness, translucency, and symbolic value. It is not known who carved it or for whom it was made.

Curious detailDato curioso

Jade is so hard that it was traditionally worked not by cutting it like wood, but by slowly wearing it away with abrasives—a process that makes the delicacy of the openwork and the loose rings even more remarkable.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I am struck by the patience this jade required, dated 1736 to 1795, during the Qing dynasty under the Qianlong reign. I notice pale greens, mint and translucent emerald with whitish veins, polished to catch the soft light and reveal transparency along the thin edges. The openwork floral band at the middle, the relief band shaped like petals or flames, and the two side dragons with loose hanging rings show extraordinary technical mastery over such a hard and treasured stone.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I think about light passing through matter. This koro, a lidded vessel photographed against a background fading from black to light gray, seems to capture light like a thin moon. The jade lets glow through its edges and polished surfaces, while the sharp shadow to the right recalls an eclipse. The open-mouthed dragons with hanging rings, the openwork flowers, and the two crouching creatures facing each other with a sphere on the lid make me imagine constellations and orbits carved in green and milky stone.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This little jade jar looks like it belongs to magic dragons! It has two dragon heads on the sides with teeth and manes, and each one holds a ring in its mouth that really looks like it can swing. In the middle there are big flowers with leaves that look like lace because they are openwork and let light through. The lid is like a little hill with two tiny crouching animals facing each other and a little ball in between. I love its mint and light emerald color, like icy candy, shiny and smooth at once.
