The Exchange Bridge (Pont au Change), from Etchings of ParisEl Puente del Cambio (Pont au Change), de la serie Grabados de París

What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal black-and-white etching with dense, wiry linework on aged, off-white paper, giving a warm sepia cast. The River Seine fills the lower half, its surface rendered with looping, cross-hatched strokes that catch light and suggest rippling current; two small rowboats with figures and a lone swimmer or wader dot the water. At mid-ground, the arched Pont au Change stretches across the river, its parapet lined with tiny bustling figures, while houseboats and floating laundry barges cluster beneath its spans. To the right, the massive palace complex of the Conciergerie rises sheer above the quay, with conical slate rooftops, clustered turrets topped by crosses and weathervanes, and heavily textured stone walls; the high embankment shows cracks, wooden ladders and beached skiffs. On the left horizon, low houses and a solitary round tower mark the far bank. The upper third is sky, filled with billowing clouds built from tangled etched lines. A large hot-air balloon drifts there, bearing faint lettering and dangling figures, accompanied by a V-formation of birds and scattered solo birds. Light is diffused and slightly eerie, and the overall plate tone creates a granular, atmospheric haze.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the balloon in the upper left, follow the flock of birds toward the bridge, then move to the clustered turrets on the right and down the cracked quay wall to the foreground boats. Notice how the fine, crowded strokes on the bridge contrast with the loose, swirling lines in the clouds and water.
ContextContexto
This print is titled Etchings of Paris: The Exchange Bridge by French artist Charles Meryon, dated 1854, part of his well-known series Eaux-Fortes sur Paris made between 1850 and 1854. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the technique is etching on paper and the subject is the Pont au Change over the Seine with the Conciergerie on the right bank. Meryon is noted for his meticulous yet moody views of Paris just before major urban renewal, often blending precise architecture with imaginative touches. No further descriptive data is provided by the source, so any reading of the balloon or small staffage figures remains visual observation rather than documented fact.

Curious detailDato curioso
Meryon's Paris etchings are celebrated for mixing accurate architectural record with fantasy, and this plate is one of several where he added an unexpected balloon to an otherwise realistic cityscape.

I focus on the sepia-toned paper and the dense, nervous linework that fills every area. The etching creates a beautiful atmospheric grain, but it is also very delicate. I see the Seine river hatched with wavy lines, the small boats, and the quay wall with cracks and wooden staircases. I worry about the diffuse light in the sky and the balloon floating above the spongy clouds, because the dark ink on the light background is highly sensitive to light exposure and the passage of time.

I look at the upper third of the print and I cannot stop watching the sky. It is covered with clouds made of tangled lines and there floats a large hot air balloon with hanging figures and the word RENTA barely legible on its fabric. It reminds me of the early mid-nineteenth century flights over Paris. There is also a V-shaped flock of birds and other solitary birds crossing the air. It feels as if Meryon wanted to fill the sky with things that fly and are meant to be observed.

I love searching for tiny things in this old picture! In the river there are two boats with rowers and even a lonely person in the water. The bridge is packed with people who look like little ants walking. On the right there is a castle with pointy witch-like towers and cross-shaped weather vanes. Up in the sky there is a giant balloon with people hanging from it, like an adventure, and lots of little birds flying in a V shape. Everything is made of little lines and looks like a dream.
