What you would seeLo que verías

On an aged ivory paper with a slightly rough, fibrous texture, a delicate graphite pencil drawing unfolds. At the center, a thin, subtly curving stem rises to support a small anemone flower seen in profile, its pointed petals radiating from a dark, shaded calyx. From the base, two large, lobed, almost kidney-shaped leaves stretch outward to the lower left and lower right in the foreground, rendered with soft cross-hatching that builds volume and casts faint, smudged gray shadows onto an implied ground. To the right, detached from the main plant, float three complementary studies of the same blossom: a tiny, barely sketched bud near the top edge, a larger frontal view with five open petals and a detailed center, and faint auxiliary lines in between. Light appears to come from above, gently modeling the folds and veins of the leaves and the translucency of the petals. The background remains empty, with generous blank paper breathing around the forms, and the overall scale feels intimate, like a field note. Small touches — a stray wispy rootlet, a double line correcting a leaf contour — reveal a calm, close observation.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central stem and follow its gentle curve up to the side-view blossom, then move down to the two large leaves to see how shading gives them weight. Next look at the three floating studies on the right and notice how the artist moves from a minimal jot to a fuller frontal flower. End with the smudged shadows beneath the leaves that anchor the airy lines to the ground.

ContextContexto

Source data identifies the work as Anemone by John La Farge (American, 1835–1910), dated broadly to c. 1850–1910, in pencil on paper, classified as a Drawing in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Marjorie Aborn. The source provides no further description. La Farge was a versatile 19th-century American artist known for painting, mural work, stained glass, and illustration, with a sustained interest in nature study and drawing from life, a common training practice at the time for learning close observation and botanical recording. The sheet is probably a preparatory or direct observational study rather than a finished exhibition piece. The exact place and precise date of execution within that range are not documented.

Curious detailDato curioso

John La Farge was a leading innovator of opalescent stained glass in the United States, and his careful pencil studies of flowers like this one often served as references for larger compositions in glass and paint.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does having several views of the same flower on one sheet tell you about the act of looking?¿Qué te revela la presencia de varios estudios de la misma flor en una sola hoja sobre el proceso de mirar?
  2. How does seeing the plant both in profile and from above change your understanding of it?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de la planta al verla a la vez de perfil y de frente?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the ivory paper with its rough texture and uneven edges. The graphite is applied with a delicate touch and cross-hatching that builds volume in the lobed leaves and soft shadow. I notice the blurred gray smudges suggesting the ground and how light models every fold. The three small floating studies on the right reveal different moments of looking. It is a fragile drawing that breathes through empty space and needs careful control of light and humidity to keep its intimacy.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I see the same method I use for the sky: observe, record and compare. The slender, slightly winding stem supports an anemone in profile with pointed petals, while on the right there are three more studies, one front-facing with five open petals and another barely sketched. The two large leaves spreading outward feel like constellations in the foreground. The light from above and the soft shading recall a pencil eclipse. It is a patient record from nature, made with calm and focus.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the flower is dancing alone in the middle of an old notebook page! It has a skinny wiggly stem and two huge leaves like elephant ears on the sides. I like that on the right there are three tiny floating flowers as if they were its ideas or passport photos. The petals look pointy and soft because of the shading. Everything is in gray and ivory and there is lots of empty space, as if the flower has plenty of air to breathe.

If you look carefully, how many small studies of the flower float to the right of the main drawing?

    HintPista

Look away from the central stem, toward the right edge of the ivory paper.

  2. #2

In the foreground, what two large lobed shapes grow from the base of the stem?

    HintPista

They are symmetrical, shaded with cross-hatching and spread to the left and right.

  3. #3

What color is the paper where the anemone is drawn?

    HintPista

It is not pure white, it is a warm aged tone like an old letter.
