What you would seeLo que verías

A single, roughly square metal container stands centered against a smooth studio background that fades from near-black at the top to pale gray at the bottom surface. The object is shown slightly from above and at a three-quarter angle, so its front, left side, and flat top are visible. It is made of gleaming silver gilt and reads overall as warm gold, with bright highlights on the raised ornament and deeper amber shadows in the recesses. The body's center panels are strikingly plain and mirror-smooth, reflecting soft light, while the corners, top edges, and base are crowded with high-relief rococo decoration: curling leaves, shells, flowers, scrolls, and textured, scale-like grounds. On the upper front, within a swirling cartouche, sits a tiny bare-breasted female figure, paler and more worn-looking than the surrounding gold. The shoulders slope inward toward a narrow rectangular lid with a low raised handle or rim, only partly visible from this angle. Along the bottom, foliage breaks into small scrolled feet that lift the box just above the surface and cast a thin shadow. Fine scratches and slight tarnish soften the shine here and there. No people, text, scale reference, or other objects appear; the caddy looks small and precious, though its exact size cannot be judged from the image alone.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the contrast between the empty, polished center and the dense ornament crowding the edges. Then move up to the small figure nestled into the scrollwork on the shoulder; that tiny human presence changes the box from pure decoration into a small staged scene. Finally, check the base: the feet are not separate supports so much as leaves and curls that happen to lift the body.

ContextContexto

This tea caddy was made in London, England, in 1741–42 by Paul Jacques de Lamerie (1688–1751), and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art in The Thomas S. Grasselli Memorial Collection. It is made of silver gilt — silver given a golden surface. According to the museum, in the 1600s and 1700s silver helped project wealth, status, power, and ritual in British life, and tea was also a highly valued commodity. A silver caddy therefore displayed its owner's social distinction twice over. Its prominently sloping shoulders were a form De Lamerie designed in the early 1730s that became standard for tea caddies by the end of that decade. Who originally owned this example is not stated.

Curious detailDato curioso

The sloping shoulders were not just decoration on this piece: De Lamerie introduced that form in the early 1730s, and within the same decade it had become a standard shape for tea caddies.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does it change about tea when its container is as valuable and worked as the drink itself?¿Qué cambia en el té cuando el recipiente que lo guarda es tan valioso y trabajado como la propia bebida?
  2. Why leave the center so empty while concentrating all the labor at the edges — is that restraint, display, or both?¿Por qué dejar el centro tan vacío y concentrar todo el trabajo en los bordes: es contención, exhibición o ambas cosas?
  3. If you held this today, would you use it for tea, keep it empty, or never open it at all?

The conservatorLa restauradora

What fascinates me most about this 1741-42 tea caddy is the intentional contrast made to shine. De Lamerie left the central panels smooth like a mirror and crowded the corners, lid and base with rococo high relief: curled leaves, shells and scrolls in gilded silver. In the center, against a plain background, the metal glows like warm gold, but amber shadows gather in the recesses with some wear. That tiny female figure in the cartouche, paler and duller, tells me the gilding there suffered more handling. The scrolled feet lift it slightly and reveal fine scratches from use.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this little caddy as a tiny golden planet against a background fading from black to light gray. The gilt silver polishes light like a mirror: the smooth central panels reflect and the rococo reliefs on the edges scatter it like craters and waves. It is from 1741-42, made in London by Paul Jacques de Lamerie, and its sloping shoulders, designed by him in the 1730s, became standard for tea caddies. With no scale or people, I imagine its size from its concentrated shine, like a star contained within four walls.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a tiny golden treasure chest. In the middle it is super smooth and shiny like a mirror, and around the edges it has lots of little plants, tiny shells and golden swirls that look like cake frosting. On top, inside a wavy frame, there is a very small doll-like lady without a top that looks paler. Underneath it has curly little feet that lift it just off the ground. I cannot tell how big it is because it is alone in the photo, but it looks precious and I imagine they kept tea inside that was very important and expensive.

  1. #1

Find the wavy little frame on the front of the caddy: what tiny figure lives inside it?

    HintPista

Look at the upper center of the front, where the gold looks paler and more worn.

  2. #2

Count the smooth sides visible at once in the photo: how many mirror-like panels does the caddy show from this angle?

    HintPista

It is shown in three-quarter view, slightly from above, so front, side and lid appear.

  3. #3

The caddy shines like solid warm gold, but what material is it actually made of?

    HintPista

It is not solid gold, it is silver covered with a golden layer that gives it that warm tone.
