silver gilt
What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a gray gradient background, darker at the top and almost white below, stands a tall, slender ewer photographed in profile, with its handle on the left and its spout on the right. Its silver-gilt surface gleams with yellow and cream reflections and deep shadows that mark every curve. The lower, egg-shaped body is divided into broad, smooth vertical flutes; at the bottom it narrows into a zone of fine radiating grooves and rests on a short stem and a wide circular foot edged with a floral band in relief. Across the upper third runs a wide frieze of scrolls, rosettes, and tightly curled leaves, worked in great detail. Above it, the neck flares and curves toward the mouth, with a leaf molding beneath the lid. The slightly domed lid ends in a small ribbed finial, like a pinecone or acorn. The high, C-shaped handle is ribbed lengthwise and springs from a fantastic animal head with leaves. Above, beside the hinge, are two small dolphin heads. The open, pointed spout is supported from below by a large curling acanthus leaf. There are no people or other objects; all attention falls on the shine, visual weight, and relief work of the metal.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the silhouette from the round foot to the tall handle and pointed spout, and notice how light breaks across the flutes. Then look closely at the upper frieze and the dolphin heads by the hinge. Those small sculpted details turn a vessel for pouring into a display of status.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this wine ewer was made in 1815 in London, England, by Paul Storr (1771-1844) with Rundell, Bridge and Rundell (1797-1834), in silver gilt. It is now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, in The Thomas S. Grasselli Memorial Collection, in the area of decorative art and design. The source notes that by the 1800s silver was firmly established in Britain as a symbol of wealth, status, and power, and that styles largely followed the taste of the reigning monarch. The scrolls by the handle, the acanthus leaf beneath the spout, and the dolphins at the hinge reflect the bolder classical taste favored during the Regency period (1811-1820). From these data, it is not known who commissioned it or at what table it was used.

Curious detailDato curioso
Silver gilt is not solid gold: it is silver covered with a thin layer of gold, which explains its intense shine and its warm color, different from the cooler tone of plain silver.

If you look closely you will see this is not just a pretty jug, it is a very careful work of silversmithing. I love how the gilt silver reflects light in yellow and cream tones, and how shadows define the lobes of the body and the fine fluting near the base. The band with scrolls, rosettes and leaves, the fluted C-shaped handle rising from a fantastic animal head, the two dolphin heads on the hinge and the acanthus leaf under the spout show the virtuosity of Paul Storr’s workshop in London in 1815. Preserving that shine and every relief is a challenge.

To me it looks like a small golden planet set against a grey background that fades from dark to light, like a sky at dawn. The egg-shaped body shines as if it had its own light, with cream highlights and deep shadows that recall craters. The domed lid with its little finial like a pinecone makes me think of an observatory dome. The classical details, the scrolls, the acanthus leaf under the spout and the dolphins on the hinge, are like carved constellations. A piece from 1815 that joins luxury, metal science and a taste for antiquity.

Wow, it looks like a giant princess jug! It is tall, golden and super shiny, as if it were made of honey with light inside. At the bottom it has a chubby belly with smooth curves and tiny lines, and near the top a band full of little swirls and flowers. The handle is like a big C with lines and comes out of a little fantasy animal mouth. On top there are two tiny dolphins and under the spout a curly leaf that looks like it is holding it up. It has a lid with a little pinecone on top. I imagine serving magic juice with it.
